In the United States of America, it is the responsibility of the Bureau of Justice Statistics to compile criminal justice systems statistics data. This data is then shared through the offices of the Justice programs and as a whole the U.S. Department of Justice.

In the month of May 2002, 75 State courts of America’s largest counties are reported to have filed approximately 56146 felony related cases. A quarter of these cases were cases of violence with assault being the most prevalent at 12.7% being closely followed by robbery cases at 5.4%. Murder being the most serious offence was at 0.8% and 1.8% of the cases being rape charges. Drug related cases attributed to 36% with drug trafficking defendants contributing to 17% of the charges related to drugs. Property cases were at 30%.Larcen
