The article, Understanding Women’s Pathways to Jail: Analyzing the Lives of Incarcerated Women is a gender-based scholarly article. It mainly oscillates around the women and their lives in incarceration. The thesis statement of this article is that crime pathways are often transgendered and also the different paths are likely to get revealed depending on the point of contact with the criminal justice system (Simpson, Yahner & Dugan, 2008). The thesis statement, from an analytical perspective, is very suggestive since it attempts to seek a need for further research to support the argument postulated by the thesis statement. It is imperative to denote that in consideration of the research’s provocative thesis, the article mainly focuses on conducting a study both from a scholarly perspective to a primary research approach.
According to the author, there are authors who argue in support of the statement that crime etiology is gendered and stipulate that there exist a myriad pathways to crime and those who do not. Therefore, the authors report an investigation that comprises of 351 jailed women. Precisely, the article focuses on women who mainly belong to the African-America race (Simpson, Yahner & Dugan, 2008). The article reports that the interviews were conducted with the selected respondents over a period of two years. In the context of conducting the research, the central research goals included an assessment on whether the study could lead to a deduction of the particular pathways regarding the incarcerated women.
From a scholarly perspective, the article attempts to depict some of the outstanding scholars who have attempted to analyze the experiences that incarcerated women always have within the juvenile and the adult justice systems. Also, it attempts to provide an overview of the circumstances that may have resulted in the incarceration of these women. For instances, the incarcerated women may mainly have resulted in crime after they experienced family violence, alcohol challenges and even childhood neglecting (Simpson, Yahner & Dugan, 2008). The author attempts to organize the literature review in such a manner that key aspects such as feminist frameworks. After conducting the research, the article confirms that the above-stipulated causes of incarceration as far as women are concerned. Further, the article also focuses on the age variable as far as incarceration and experience as a prisoner is concerned.
The research problem in this article has multiple edges. That implies that there are several elements that the article intends to evaluate. However, the central subjects under analysis in the research are the women. The research intends first to evaluate the core reasons why the women often get incarcerated. From a professional perspective, the concept used to depict the research problem in the article is that of the pathways. Therefore, the article intends to establish the crime pathways that are feministic. That includes determining the rationality of these pathways to being such criminal that would only be corrected through a serious federal, state or even local correctional facility. Therefore, in the entirety of the article, the article is expected to postulate scholarly and primary data regarding the incriminating pathways of women that resulted in their incarceration. Besides determining these incriminating pathways, the article intends to differentiate them regarding the age of the women. According to the authors, there is a high feasibility that age is of the great essence as far a pathway is concerned (Simpson, Yahner & Dugan, 2008). That way, the research problem considers the women to be the dependent variable and the age to be the independent variable.
It is imperative to denote that the article mainly focuses on conducting the research. Hence, the authors’ ability to select an outstanding approach towards developing an outstanding research can be considered as a strength especially in the context of understanding the women and the pathways towards incarceration. The study in the article embraces a phenomenological study design. In this case, the article provides that the study incorporates 351 respondents to an interview intended to establish their response regarding their pathways towards being incarcerated (Simpson, Yahner & Dugan, 2008). The article, from an argumentative perspective, incorporates a calendar organized and structured approach towards gathering this information. The central subject in the calendar organized framework is that of the women’s lives, as well as, their experiences before their being incarcerated.
In the context of sampling, the article stipulates that the sampled women were selected from the general inmate populated in the Baltimore City Detention Centre. The criterion used in the sampling was that the women had to be aged over 18 years. Then, these women were trained for them to satisfy the criterion stipulated for participating in the study. The study also incorporates a research concern where the retrospective methods are considered to be more effective. In the context of data analysis, the research employs two approaches. The first one is affiliated with replicating the Daly’s classification (Simpson, Yahner & Dugan, 2008). The secondary strategy is affiliated with distinguishing the participants in terms age. It is imperative to denote that the methods used in the research are not complicated, and they still serve the right and intended purpose.
The literature in this context provides recent scholarly provisions related to the pathways towards women incarceration. Further, the authors cited in the literature review happen to have provided their versions regarding the issue of age as far as the pathways and experience of the incarcerated women before they are imprisoned is concerned. The literature review, from an argumentative perspective, provides a guideline towards the approach that is used in the research design. Remember, the literature review provides the most common circumstances that would have influenced the women to engage in actions that would land them in prison. That way, the article has a comprehensive and well-organized literature review. It is easy to determine the research gap which is supposed to be addressed in the study.
The author’s approach towards investigating the topic is rational and outstanding. The phenomenological approach associated with interviewing the respondents assists in acquiring direct responses from the subjects of the research. The fact that the respondents have to undergo training is also essential since it provides a platform for quality research and outcomes. Both in the context of sampling and analyzing the data, the authors happen to have selected best-suited methods. However, in the context of the life calendars, there are other concerns regarding this method since there is a feasibility of there being a concern of validity. However, these methods have altogether assisted in developing a successful research. There is a great relationship between the research results and the findings of the literature review. That means that the findings are quite accurate. However, the article fails to explain how the statistical inferences were acquired. That makes it hard for some audience to understand the findings resulting in the research to lose a fraction of the audience that would have used it.
