Introduction

Solitary confinement refers to a type of incarceration in which an inmate is secluded from all human contacts apart from prison employees for more than 23 hours a day. Moreover, prisoners in solitary confinement are allowed little time for recreation or showers (Shalev 13). They are locked-up in concrete room with restricted amount of natural air or natural light. Similarly, it serious restricts the movements of prisoners and access to services, programmes, treatment, and visits. It is commonly used as a method of punishment to prisoners who have breached the prison regulations or those who have engaged in severe infractions such as being found with drugs in prison, fighting with other prisoners (Cloud et al. 19). In addition, it is used among persons who are a threat to suicide. Correctional services have utilized solitary confinement as an instrument to handle gangs and secluding persons for interacting with alleged members of a gang.

Solitary confinement is a major challenge in the United States. In fact, statistics from the Bureau of Justice Statistics indicate that approximately 80, 000 children, women and men in are forced into solitary confinement every year around the country (Shalev 13). However, the figure does not capture the number of people in solitary confinements in areas such as immigrant detention, and juvenile facilities. Furthermore, almost all states in the country utilize some type of solitary confinement although federal recording mechanism does not exist. Studies have also indicated most prisoners spend more than two decades in solitary prison locations (Cloud et al. 21). Similarly, people of colour are more likely to be highly affected by this problem.

More importantly, empirical evidence has indicated that solitary confinement has serious psychological impacts to the lives of human being. Therefore, it is considered a form of torture hence it has drawn the attention of human rights movement, legal experts and mental health
