Write a critical analysis of the following passages. In order to complete this assignment, you will need to do a close reading of the text, i.e., you will have to carefully examine individual words, sentences, figures of speech, rhetorical techniques, tone, etc. Your paper itself will be a textual analysis of the passages in which you use what you have identified in the close reading to interpret and critique the passages. You are expected to be as specific as possible in your analysis, using the text itself to support your interpretation or critique. However, citing or paraphrasing the original without analysis is not enough. The assignment you hand in must go beneath the surface of the text to uncover as much of its significance as possible. Since this is the first time we are asking you to read between the lines in this way, we offer some approaches below as starting points for your analysis.
Remember, this exercise is about learning to read texts carefully, identify important information, and analyze and present what you have found as evidence in an organized, well-argued way. This is a necessary step in good paper writing, and we will be going over this skill in tutorials throughout the year.
