Paper Instructions

Texas at Court

In your second paper of the semester you will write about a significant court case in Texas. I have a list of the court cases in the announcements. They will be granted on a first-come-first-serve basis. You must email me by noon on Tuesday, September 11, 2018, to let me know what court case you are researching (I will subtract ten percent from your final essay grade if you do not email me your case by the due date). You will include a summary of the facts of the case and a summary of the court’s decision/opinion and then spend about half of the paper discussing the significance of the case for Texas and the rest of the United States (e.g. how did the case challenge the political ideology and culture of Texas?…how did the case help/hurt a particular group of people?). You will find details of these cases through an Internet search on websites like: www.findlaw.com or www.oyez.org. You must use at least three scholarly sources (MLA citation style). Remember to cite any sources that you use in your paper.

Your essay must be between 1750 to 2000 words long. Please use a font like Time New Roman and the 12pt size.

Guidelines:

1. Title–Your paper should have a title that is descriptive and provocative. It should make someone want to read your paper.

2. Contractions–Don’t use contractions in formal writing assignments. (Get it?? Don’t!)

3. One-sentence Paragraphs–Do not use one-sentence paragraphs.

4. First Person–Do not use “I” or “you;” the paper is not a letter (or a guideline for an essay).

5. Make sure your paper has page numbers.

Paper Instructions

Qualitative Field Research

For this assignment, you will be asked to a passive paper should be approximately 5 double-spaced pages in 12pt. Times New Roman font.

For this assignment, you will need to do the following:

1. You will need to select a research site that is not completely familiar to you. Observation is about taking in all of the surroundings. If you are familiar with you site, there are possibilities that you may not see a lot of what is going on because you expect it or you take it for granted. Try to avoid places immediately on campus or by your home, if possible. Chain restaurants and coffee shops try to establish uniformity from one place to the next, so you may take a lot of what you see at those places for granted. Make sure the site is public and your presence is not disruptive or noticeable. That is, you can sit and take notes without bothering anyone.

2. You will be conducting a passive observation of public behavior. This means that you will essentially be using a “fly on the wall” technique. You may not ask anyone any questions, but can conduct yourself the way that is “expected” in the given site. You are meant to just observe what is going on around you. If someone asks you what you are doing, tell him or her it is an assignment for a sociology course.

3. You will need to take field notes. Observe and record movements, interactions, sights, sounds, spatial arrangements, and anything else that strikes you. Describe what you can about the setting. If there are things on the walls, check them out. Write down your observations on the spot. If you are in a place where this is impossible, remember as much as you can and write down your notes immediately afterward. Your observation should last at least 30 minutes. Writing up field notes is a very detailed process; make sure you are getting 30 minutes worth of data (which is A LOT).

4. After your initial experience, review your field notes and generate some hypotheses about what you saw. Did you notice any patterned behavior? What makes this place unique? Why are people doing the things they are doing? Who is doing what and why? How are individuals presenting their selves in this environment? Can you decipher any rules that structure interaction?

5. Return to this field site for a structured observation for another 30 minutes. Specifically look at the interactions, behaviors, etc., about which you hypothesized. Do you find any support that could lead to theory building?

6. In your write-up, you should include an introduction that introduces the site, why you chose it, and a glimpse at what you found. You should then describe the setting, giving as much detail as possible to fully explain how you were observing the site. You should then give a description of what you saw and how it led you to the hypothes(i/e)s that you came up with. What patterns did you see? What deviations from the general order did you see? Who was doing what and why? Then, describe the results of your second visit in relation the hypothes(i/e)s. Conclude with a reaction to the activity. How did you feel in the field? Were you comfortable observing the behaviors of others? Do you feel confident that you represented their behavior accurately? Was there a lot of interpretation that you had to do on your part?

7. Keep your field notes and turn them in with your write-up. Make sure they have your name on them and are fastened in some way.

8. Be careful not to disrupt your research site. Make sure you do not record any data that could be traced back to the people your have observed.

Project II Guidelines

Florida Endangered Species

Introduction

This project is about elaborating a complete Profile of ONE endangered species of your choosing. In the Florida List species are cited as either endangered or threatened.

Based on the information that you gather you will Asess and Classify your species using the IUCN categories explained in the document provided (Pages 14- 15) or IUCN website (www.iucn.org ). This is a more detailed and international system than the one used for the list.

Under the Endangered Species Act (ESA), species can be listed as either endangered or threatened, but the IUCN provides a more accurate approach to classifying the status of a species.

Structure

The structure is going to be the same used for the previous project. You can also use subheadings.

Introduction

Objectives

Mention what you are going to do.

Material and Methods

How the work was done.

Results (Profile)

Include graphs, maps, tables, pictures and descriptions.

Results (Profile)

Introduction

Introduction is sometimes called the State of the Art chapter, so please use two or three parragraphs to introduce your topic, in this case your species, why it is endangered, it´s taxonomic position, it´s a Bird, a Mammal, a Plant, etc… It´s importance beyond the fact that it´s a key species, if it is the case, like economic importance.

Objectives

Mention what you are going to do. You are going to make a Profile as complete as possible, on a local (statewide preferably) species giving preference to updated information about it printed or online, and then you will make an assessment of such species using the IUCN categories available at the IUCN website.

Material and Method

It means Procedures. How the work was done, when and where. This is a homebased Project, or Library based, for which several websites as well as printed papers and books are consulted. It was done during the Spring Semester for the Bio 2010 class, at the MDC Kendall Campus.

Results (Profile)  (Must have the following components):

Distribution: Inside and outside the US. Please include maps!

Distribution and Abundance are Critical topics in order to declare a Species as Endangered.

Abundance: How many individuals are usually found on natural populations. Make an emphasis on the genetics implications of Endangerement, decrease of diversity leading to diseases, etc.

Biometry: Measurements available on the web, papers or books you review. You are encouraged to make charts out of those measurements.

Morphology: Description of the species including pictures. Emphasize remarkable aspects!

Comments or Remarks: Data on economic importance or other.

3

Assessment: According to IUCN categories, but proposed by you as a Team or Individual. It doesn´t have to be accurate, but please justify your decision.

References

Don´t forget we must cite the sources that you used for elaborating the Profile or making the assessment.

General

Paper must be at least 6 full pages to a maximum of 12 pages that is written on Arial, Size 12, double- spaced and in APA format but without an Abstract.  All research material is to be included and properly cited when the paper is turned in for the rough draft evaluation (If you send it in advance!) and the final.

Documents, the Word Report and the PP presentation are to be turned in as e-documents not HARD COPIES, let´s try to go paperless as much as we can.

The oral presentation of the paper is 6-7 min in length, with at least 6 to 12 slides and each student is to be fully prepared on the subject to give his/her presentation.  Teams will be called at random. All students must attend all the presentations to receive full credit for his/her presentation. Is also about sharing knowledge!

Topic

AB Pty. Ltd is a delivery company who has 3 trucks to deliver different products for third parties

Content

Choose a Business Case only for the assignment

Business Case One:

Smart application to monitor trucks movement and telemetry

AB Pty. Ltd is a delivery company who has 3 trucks to deliver different products for third parties. They have their set delivery zone which covers an area (feel free to choose an area) of Austin downtown, Texas, USA. Due to the expanding demand their trucks are always busy. Most recently, they are receiving complaints about delayed delivery and long queue of pending delivery. In the initial stage of their business a truck on average can deliver 5 times a day. However, current average for their trucks is only 3 times per day. The general manager of AB Pty. Ltd appointed a business analyst to identify potential causes of the delay. The business analyst made a number of stage one recommendations below –

• Develop a smart application to simulate the trucks movement.

• Divide the entire delivery area into two zones.

• Write a NODE-RED function node that will

o set different speed limits of the truck for each zone and outside the zone.

o change speed value( feel free to assume the speed values) when it enters in a delivery zone and change it back when it is outside of the delivery zone. You can use ID of delivery zone, entry and exit message from GeoAlert to know about their entry and exit in a specific zone.

• Set following custom properties –

o Total delivery allocated ( this field will show a delivery number allocated to the truck)

o Total delivered numbers at current time (will show number of delivery done). In this case assume that every entry in the zone is the start of a delivery and every exit in a zone is the end of a delivery.

• System should alert the management via email/Twitter, if a truck

o violated the speed limit of the zone. [ NB: Use the speed limit you have set in your assignment two] or

o finished their allocated delivery

• Create a visual dashboard using NODE-RED which will have a speed gauge and speed chart of a specific truck.

AB Pty. Ltd appointed you as an ICT professional to develop a simulated connected vehicle application for simulation in Bluemix which will address the milestones above recommended by the business analyst.

Business Case Two:

Smart application to remotely monitor a patient’s movement details

AB hospital has a physiotherapy department with 3 patients. The hospital is very renowned for their services. It is receiving increasing pressure to increase their capacity to serve more physiotherapy patients. However, their current capacity is limited to 3 patients only. Furthermore, as part of their service, they also want to collect information about their patients walking habits within the walking zone of the hospital to serve them better. They have appointed a business analyst to identify actions to address the issues. The business analyst made a number of stage one recommendations below –

• Divide the entire walking area (feel free to choose an area) in Austin downtown, Texas, USA into two zones.

• Write a NODE-RED function node that will

o set different walking speed of the patient for each zone and outside the zone.

o change speed value when it enters in a walking zone and change it back when it is outside of the zone. You can use ID of walking zone, entry and exit message from GeoAlert to know about their entry and exit in a specific zone.

• Set following custom properties –

o Total number of meters required to walk ( this field will show a delivery number allocated to the patient)

o Total number of meters walking done at current time (number of entries in the zone X 10 meters).

• System should alert the management via email/Twitter, if a patient

o violated the walking speed limit of the zone. [ NB: Use the speed limit you have set in your assignment two] or

o finished their allocated walking meters

• Create a visual dashboard using NODE-RED which will have a walking speed Gauge and speed chart of a specific patient.

The AB hospital appointed you as an ICT professional to develop a simulated connected patient’s application for simulation in Bluemix which will address the milestones above recommended by the business analyst.

This needs to be a literature review for the course “Ethics in Criminal Justice” (ironic I know). It requires you to choose a specific moral dilemma that occurs in criminal justice and make a moral argument/moral claim about it. From the instruction sheet: “Your introductory statement should identify the moral claim you will make and defend, describe the structure of your paper and tell the reader your primary argument.” Example: ( DO NOT use this topic for my paper please!) “My topic is the morality of deceptive interrogation. I shall defend a position against deceptive interrogation by arguing, first, that no satisfactory moral rationale can be offered for any state sanctioned deception perpetrated on an individual citizen and secondly, that a “pro” position cannot be accepted without also accepting the morality of using a human being as a means to an end, thus degrading his/her humanity. I will rely on Kantian philosophy to support my position.” Also, it’s required that a type of philosophy is used to support the argument. In the example above, Kantian philosophy is used. I would also like to send the full instruction sheet to whoever will be writing this for me to ensure we’re on the same page. Please make sure all sources are scholarly sources. Before you begin, please confirm with me the moral argument you will make and the type of philosophy you will use to defend the moral argument. Thank you very much.

Send to me the moral argument

Que. 21 Global Warming: Causes and Mitigation

Global warming is the equivocal increase of the average earth`s temperature due to excessive release of greenhouse gases such as carbon dioxide, nitrous oxide, methane, chlorofluorocarbons, water vapor, and sulphur hexafluoride. This condition occurs when greenhouse gases deplete the ozone layer, making more ultra violet rays to reach the earth`s surface. In addition, these gases form a “blanket” in the atmosphere that prevents the warm air conditions from escaping.

Que.2 2: Portfolio Shell Creation

Introduction:

The purpose of this task is to create a shell of your portfolio; you will complete the remaining sections of the portfolio later. Throughout your time at WGU, you will develop skills and knowledge that will support your practice as that of a baccalaureate-prepared nurse. A professional portfolio will showcase your knowledge and skills to prospective employers and will increase your marketability as a baccalaureate-prepared nurse. This portfolio will help you focus on the concepts, strengths, and clinical reasoning abilities that will define your professional nursing practice.

Use the Web Folio Builder in Taskstream to create a professional portfolio. Follow the (Building Your Portfolio) web link for creating your portfolio. When you are ready to submit your portfolio for evaluation, please follow the instructions in the attached “How to Submit Your Portfolio for Evaluation.”

In this task, you will reflect on key concepts from throughout your degree program: quality and safety, evidence-based practice, applied leadership, and community and population health.

Requirements:

Your submission must be your original work. No more than a combined total of 30% of the submission and no more than a 10% match to any one individual source can be directly quoted or closely paraphrased from sources, even if cited correctly. Use the Turnitin Originality Report available in Taskstream as a guide for this measure of originality.

You must use the rubric to direct the creation of your submission because it provides detailed criteria that will be used to evaluate your work. Each requirement below may be evaluated by more than one rubric aspect. The rubric aspect titles may contain hyperlinks to relevant portions of the course.

A. Create a portfolio shell in Taskstream.

1. Create four sections labeled with the following headings:

               quality and safety

               evidence-based practice

               applied leadership

               community and population health

B. Briefly describe “each” of the following sections by drawing on your clinical experiences, (e.g., skills lab, simulation, clinical rotations and/or professional practice):

         quality and safety

         evidence-based practice

         applied leadership

         community and population health

Note: A short paragraph of a few sentences will be sufficient to fill the space for now. You may include experiences from your life that influenced your decision to become a nurse (e.g. What does the experience mean? Why is the experience important? How will you integrate what you learned from that experience into your practice?).

C. Acknowledge sources, using APA-formatted in-text citations and references, for content that is quoted, paraphrased, or summarized.

D. Demonstrate professional communication in the content and presentation of your submission.

Que.2 3

que.2 4 Does increased campaign spending directly correlate a positive electoral outcome?

The essay should include the following elements:

1. A puzzle and research question.

2. A hypothesis/hypotheses.

3. A literature review.

4. Evidence to support or discredit the hypotheses.

5. A conclusion.

The research paper has to be about: UK Political Party Spending at previous elections.

The Independent Variables have to be:

Money spent towards advertising

Money spent towards X

Money spent towards.. etc etc

You can find all this information on the website: The Electoral Commission

You also need to include Excel Graphics

Naturally I do not expect you to do a full-fledged analysis in a 2500 word essay. (Although I will not discourage you if you want to try your hand at a statistical analysis!) Nonetheless, I expect you to present evidence to support or discredit your hypotheses in an original way. There are many databases that contain socio-political data that allow you to assess hypotheses. If you decide to refer to findings from other researchers, I expect you to present their evidence in your own, original way rather than e.g. copying tables and graphs. Make sure to reference other people’s work correctly! I would like to avoid plagiarism hearings and assume the same is true for you.

Que.25 Equiano

To what extent does Equiano’s awareness of his lowly status as a slave impel him to turn to a European religion; adopt European (capitalist) business practices; and become an “individual” in the European and/or Enlightenment sense of that term? Do you think Equiano abandoned his “roots,” by participating enthusiastically in European wars, religion, and commerce (including the slave trade), etc? Did he ‘sell out’ to some

extent? Obviously, Equiano is a complex character. He was an abolitionist but he also participated in the slave trade and advocated the colonization of Africa (at the end of his memoir). Try to explain some of the tensions or contradictions in his character, by looking both at his psychology and at some of the social forces at work in the Eighteenth Century or Enlightenment era. It’s up to you to devise a main point about Equiano that gets at his

complexity without being meandering! (Again: don’t just answer the questions!)

Que. 26 Community Engagement

The importance of community engagement in effective policing first came to the forefront in the 1980s with the advent of community-oriented policing. Since then, community engagement and cooperation has become increasingly important and law enforcement agencies are using a multitude of innovative programs to engage with their communities.

For this Assignment, you will create a Microsoft  PowerPoint presentation on community engagement. In your presentation, address the following:

Why community relationships are imperative to effective policing.

How administration of a criminal justice organization is made easier with positive community partnerships.

Through research, outline four current community relations programs being used by law enforcement organizations today. For each program, cover the following:

Summarize the program.

Explain how the program improves police-community relations.

Discuss any measures of success you are able find for the program.

NOTE: Prepare your presentation as though you were going to present it in front of a group. Refrain from excessive amounts of words on each slide. Use concise, bulleted lines and utilize the notes section below each slide for additional details you would discuss in your presentation but may not be required on the slide itself.

In addition to fulfilling the specifics of the Assignment, a successful presentation must also meet the following criteria.

Length should be 16-18 slides, excluding title slide and references slide.

Include a title slide with full name, class name, section number, and date.

Use examples to support your discussion.

Cite all sources on a separate reference slide at the end of your presentation and cited within the body of the presentation using APA style.

PowerPoint Formatting Directions:

Use one basic slide design and layout.

Limit slides to between 6 and 8 lines of content.

You may use pictures, charts, and graphs to supplement your material as long as they do not take up the entire slide.

Use bullets for your main points.

Use speaker notes to explain what is being discussed in the bullet points as though you are presenting to an audience.

The presentation should contain a cover slide and a list of references in APA style.

Que. 28 Respond to at least 3 scenarios

Intervention Scenarios

Directions: Choose three scenarios and develop a Response Plan, in the form of an outline.

Scenario One: Inpatient nephrology unit

You are the new nurse manager for a busy nephrology medical/surgical unit in a large university medical center. The renal physicians have complained that daily weights and intake/output records are not being completed. This lack of documentation affects the patient’s plan of care and is resulting in an increased length of stay for the unit. The night-shift nurses think the day-shift nurses need to do the daily weights since they have more staffing. The day-shift nurses think the night-shift needs to do the weights since breakfast arrives during report most days. No one is consistently recording the intake/output records. How will you handle this problem?

Scenario Two: Outpatient chest pain/stroke unit

You have just been promoted to the nurse manager position in a 12-bed chest pain/stroke outpatient center. The hospital is at 18 months of the 36-month Joint Commission accreditation cycle, so you are expecting a survey sometime within the next 18 months. You are reviewing the Joint Commission Core Measures for Outpatient Departments.

You discover an issue with the administration of aspirin on arrival for the chest pain/acute MI patients not being documented 50 percent of the time. Also, the time to CT scan for ruling out acute ischemic stroke patient is 75 minutes, which is 30 minutes above benchmark time of 45 minutes. Who needs to be involved in examining these processes in order to improve compliance prior to the survey? Would you develop one team to work on both issues or two teams so that each works on one issue? Why?

Scenario Three: School nurse

You are the only school nurse in a high school (grades 10, 11, and 12). The school is located in a small rural conservative town. There has been a 15 percent increase in students contracting sexually transmitted diseases and three girls in the junior class are pregnant. The community insists that the area schools only teach abstinence to the students. The school board does not want to anger the parents. While you respect the culture of the town, you realize this is a huge community health problem. Where do you start to address this issue?

Scenario Four: Inpatient psych unit

You are the nurse manager of an inpatient psychiatric unit and are preparing a report for a Joint Commission survey. An epidemic of bath salts abuse has struck the community. Following initial treatment in the intensive care unit, violent psychiatric patients are being admitted to the unit. You reviewed the Joint Commission guidelines and discovered deficiencies in several categories of the patient discharge records and your seclusion hours are increasing.

Who will you involve in the interdisciplinary team to work on the discharge issues? How will you work on decreasing seclusion hours in these patients?

Scenario Five: Pediatric vaccinations.

You are the nurse manager in a large pediatric practice. It is late summer and parents are bringing their children in to get their “blue cards” filled out for school. Several parents have been asking for medical exemptions because the local news has been reporting on a rash of adverse reactions to vaccinations, even linking an incident relating a child’s recent diagnosis of autism to an MMR vaccine. How will you proceed in obtaining the best evidence to help work with the parents?

Que. 29 COPA model Assessment

In this assignment, students apply the COPA Practice Competencies to three clinical nursing experiences.

Directions

Use the COPA_Model Assessment Assignment Format (which will be an attachment with this order)

Review the COPA Model’s eight core competencies and sub skills described in the COPA Model Presentation or the Lenburg’s et al. article, “The framework, concepts, and methods of the competency outcomes and performance assessment (COPA) model.”

Review your reflective learning/thinking, critical thinking, and Benner assignments (which will be an attachment with this order) to identify the COPA Model competency and sub skills that you met in the experiences you described in each of these assignments.

Explain why you believe you met the competency (ies) and sub skills you identified.

Use Benner’s Stages of Clinical Competence to identify your level of proficiency in each of the five experiences you described in the three assignments (which will be an attachment with this order).

These include the:

reflective learning/thinking experience;

critical thinking experience; and

three experiences you included in your Benner competency assessment assignment.

Use Benner’s criteria to provide a rationale for the level of proficiency you believe you demonstrated in these experiences.

Que. 30 Supply Chain Management

Supply chain management is the integration of activities that procure materials and services, transform them into intermediate goods and final products, and deliver them to customers. The production, distribution, and sale of both goods and services are bound by constraints in demand, supply, capacity, capability, and a myriad of other parameters.

In this assignment, consider the strategic implications of how an organization produces and interacts with its partners, customers, and suppliers.

Using the module readings, University online library resources, and the Internet, research supply chain management processes. Based on your research, complete the following:

• Describe the overall goal of a supply chain.

• Describe the difference between a supply that is responsive (service) and a supply chain that is efficient. Can a supply chain be both?

• How can an organization optimize supply chain management to improve results and remove obstacles? Support your answer with two current examples.

• Based on your learning from your research, what additional recommendations might add to what was accomplished?

Write a 3–5-page paper in Word format. Apply APA standards to citation of sources.

Grading Criteria Maximum Points

Described the overall goal of a supply chain, differentiated between a supply that is responsive (service) and a supply chain that is efficient, and examined whether a supply chain can be both. 24

Provided two examples of organizations where optimization of supply chain management has helped the organization improve its results. 24

Provided additional recommendations to add to what was accomplished. 32

Wrote in a clear, concise, and organized manner; demonstrated ethical scholarship in accurate representation and attribution of sources; displayed accurate spelling, grammar, and punctuation. 20

I don’t accept a 5th paper for extra points, I will give you an opportunity to re-write 1 response. A reading response should accomplish two primary things: first, it should summarize the text and second, it should evaluate that text. All supplemental readings/podcasts are non-traditional (meaning they’re not out of a textbook) and take some sort of stance on a particular political issue or topic. The author’s may be right, they may be wrong, they may do a poor job of shedding light on or explaining a political phenomenon, etc. In these reading responses, you will take a position and judge these authors their interpretations the political world. Your paper should be organized as follows:Introduction: This should be written last; I should be able to read it and know exactly what your paper is about and what you will argue. Tell me how your paper will be organized and don’t be afraid to say “I.” The last sentence of your introduction will have your thesis statement. Body paragraph 1:Brifely outline the main ideas of the supplementary reading & connect it to theories, concepts, ideas, historical explanations found in the textbook Example paragraph format:o Topic sentenceo Commentaryo Text support (direct quote or summary)o Analysiso Transition Body paragraph 2: In this paragraph, you should evaluate the text and the author’s claims. You don’t have to simply disagree or agree with the author- maybe they are right about some things and wrong about other. Use your own understanding of American politics (via your family, job, school, childhood) to reject some of the author’s claims, add to them, or confirm them. Use qualitative data (personal stories, interviews, literature, historical examples), or quantitative data (statistics, numbers), or reasoning skills (maybe the author contradicts themself). Or all of the above! Conclusion: Don’t simply re-summarize your paper. Instead, connect the topic to the bigger picture of American Politics. Maybe raise questions you still have—hint at areas for further exploration. Answer the “so what?” question; why does this stuff even matter? Why should we care?

Assignment: Examine Capacity Management for a New Startup Venture

Instructions

To any person considering the launch of an enterprise, the Shouldice Hospital story is a refreshing reminder of how startups in any field – in this case, health care – can succeed with the right ingredients and passion to excel. This week’s readings include references to a successful startup that grew from the willingness of one individual (Dr. Edward Earle Shouldice) to respond to a recognized need. Your challenge in this assignment is to develop a paper in which you apply the principles of capacity management and illustrate the impact of forecasting on the implementation of those principles, based on the following scenario:

You and two of your closest colleagues are considering the launch of a start-up and you believe that the Shouldice success story is relevant to your new venture. Generate responses to several categories of probing questions as a basis for discussion. Since your findings will be presented in a practical format to enlighten the thinking of your two potential future partners, you may forego the formality of a case analysis in favor of a document that provides clear, accurate, and actionable responses to the questions listed below. In addition to this week’s readings, you may also use popular sources related to the Shouldice case to amplify the points you wish to emphasize in your discussion with your colleagues. If, during your writing, you discover additional areas of importance that are not triggered by these questions, feel free to include them in your paper.

1.    Identify three business components (within the broad categories of people, process/facility, or technology) that presented problems for Shouldice Hospital in the late 1940’s. Define steps that your startup team might take to avoid similar problems when your service or product is launched.

2.    Determine the value of an accurate forecast in terms of its influence on quality of service delivery and/or potential growth for your start-up. In what ways would an accurate forecast of hernia repair demand influence business decisions at Shouldice?

3.    Examine the demographics of Shouldice patients, such as their overall health, type of surgery required, age, etc. What target-market demographics will enhance the success of your start-up?

4.    How do you know when to stop growing your start-up? How might Shouldice have determined a practical limit to economies of scale? At what point should Shouldice have decided to stop growing? What metrics should be monitored to determine that growth has plateaued?

Support your assignment with at least three scholarly resources. In addition to these specified resources, other appropriate scholarly resources, including older articles, may be included.

Length: 5 pages, not including assignment coversheet, title page, and reference page(s). Use topic section headings for each of the questions listed above.

social construction of reality, dominant ideology, impression management, etc.

2. Explain how / if this experiment on religious culture challenges ethnocentric points

of view regarding negative (deviant) labels of some categories of individuals and

groups.

3. Explain how using cultural relativism can contribute to your growth and understanding of other cultures.

You will complete the study just as you are instructed in parts 1, 2 and 3, paying particular attention to all of the questions in Part 3, making sure that you answer each thoroughly.

1. Observing Service

Select a House of Worship and attend a service there.

Any service is fine as long as it is open to the public. If you are unfamiliar with the House of Worship that you want to attend, you might want to call first to find out if there are any dress codes or other requirements that you need to know before entering. Remember, when you visit your chosen House of Worship, you must behave in a respectful manner. Once there, your task will be to closely observe your surroundings and all that takes place (and in which you might participate.)

2. Write your notes on what you observe.

Since it is probably not appropriate to jot down notes during the service, you may make an effort to write your field notes as soon as you can afterward so you can preserve as many details as possible from the experience. Your field notes should comprise three or more pages and include descriptions of material and non-material symbolic culture. Consider some of the material culture you might find in the setting, such as the architecture, furniture, decorations, clothing worn by various participants, and other physical objects such as scrolls, books, musical instruments such as collection plates. You also want to consider the elements of symbolic culture featured in the services. Pay close attention to the people there and what they do–their roles, activities, and interactions. Notice how the service is structured.

3. Identifying culture

*What aspects of material culture did you notice? How were things arranged and what were their function? Were any objects used as part of the service?

*What did you notice about language? Was there a text or script for the services? What sources were used (sacred books, hymnals, printed programs? Was music play or sung or both?

* Who was present for the service–clergy, congregation, others? Were there adults, children, men, and women? Specific roles held—leaders, helpers, participants?

* When did participants stand, sit, sing, pray, kneel meditate, etc.?

* According to Durkheim, every religion has a set of practices that are designed to connect the holy and the worldly in some way. Think about the meaning of the different rituals you observed: communion, praying/singing in a designated space. How do rituals help create collective conscience or sense of belonging among the congregants?

* What did you observe that seemed especially unfamiliar to you? What was familiar to you even if it was in an unfamiliar setting? What insights were you able to gain by suspending ethnocentrism and practicing cultural relativism?

Finally, you will discuss at least three (3) concepts and/or theories that appear to be relevant to this assignment.

Write a 3½ – 4 page essay analyzing your field experiences and taking into consideration the questions in step 3. Make sure you refer to your field notes.

MBA 665 Final Project Milestone Three Guidelines and Rubric

Overview: The final project for this course is the creation of an impact of governmental action on a business paper. For Milestone Three you will submit the Analysis section of your final project, which is Section II of the critical elements. Your analysis should include answers to all the questions in the Analysis section on business environment, sustainability, internal resources, communication, company image, response, impact, and external resources.

Specifically, the following critical elements must be addressed:

I.         Analysis: After submitting your overview, your boss is having second thoughts about bringing Jack Harris and his firm, Crisis Consulting, on board. Before he makes his final decision he has asked you to provide him with a thorough analysis of the situation faced by your business. He asks you to prepare a memorandum to him (the CEO) analyzing the situation that your business faces as well as the resources that are available to it. Address the following:

A.      Business Environment: Based on your analysis of the governmental action or political challenge, what will be the impact of the governmental action or political challenge on the business’s financial situation and operations? Does the action represent an opportunity or a threat?

B.      Sustainability: Based on your analysis of the governmental action or political challenge, how will the governmental action or political challenge impact the sustainability of the business?

C.      Internal Resources: Evaluate the internal resources of the company, including the business project teams that are available to respond to the opportunity or threat. In other words, is the business adequately organized to address the opportunity or threat?

D.      Communication: How has information about the situation been communicated to various stakeholders? For example, have any public hearings been held? Have the radio, newspapers, or social media been used?

E.      Company Image: Assess how the situation has affected the company’s public image. Has the impact been primarily positive or negative? If the impact has been primarily negative, what are the positive aspects in addition to the negative aspects? If the impact has been primarily positive, what are the negative aspects in addition to the positive aspects?

F.       Response: What are the potential courses of action to respond to the situation in the current macroeconomic and business environment? In other words, what is the range of options for the business in this situation?

G.      Impact: How will these courses of action impact the business? Make sure to consider both short- and long-term impacts, including operational, financial, and ethical implications.

H.      External Resources: Evaluate the roles and functions of third parties or external resources in the situation. Consider questions such as these in your response: How will lobbyists be involved in the situation? Will there be public affairs professionals who will argue on behalf of the government or the business?

Guidelines for Submission: Your paper must be submitted as an 8-10 page Microsoft Word document with double spacing, 12-point Times New Roman font, one- inch margins, and sources cited in APA format.

Overview

In the words of Peter Kreeft, “The idea of God is either a fact, like sand, or a fantasy, like Santa.” This is the fundamental question raised in Module 5. Namely, what are we rationally entitled to conclude about God’s potential existence? And if God does exist, what type of God is supported by empirical evidence? Said differently, is it rational to believe in a God that is omniscient, omnipotent, omnibenevolent (call these the three O’s), or does this characterization fail to hold up to scrutiny?

In support of the claim that God exists, there are two options to consider during this module. First, is the cosmological argument, which generates the conclusion God exists based on fundamental considerations about the cause of the world and/or why there is something rather than nothing. Second, is the teleological argument, which posits the existence of God based on the appearance of design. Both arguments rest on empirical (or a posteriori) reasoning. Both have deep roots in the history of philosophy. Both have particular versions that are important to consider for your essay.

In support of the claim that God does not exist, is the problem of evil. According to it, based on a careful examination of moral and natural evils in relation to the three O’s, God simply cannot exist. Said differently, pairing together the fact of evil with the concept of God is like postulating the existence of a round-square. A round-square is a contradictory object, whose actual existence is not rationally justified. So, too, (goes the argument) is an omniscient, omnipotent, omnibenevolent God that allows for moral and natural evil.

Essay Question: Critically evaluate ONE of the above three arguments (i.e., the cosmological, teleological or problem of evil) for or against God’s existence. Do NOT write on all three topics. The idea here is go into depth on a single one. Please note that there are different versions of these arguments, and it may be wise to distinguish between the different versions in your essay.

ENGLISH COMPOSITION II (ENGL 1102) PROJECT 3: PERSONAL MANIFESTO

Overview:

Each student will develop a “Personal Manifesto” that will document their positionality within a specific social, political, and cultural context. In addition, they must develop positions on 4 topics that are part of that context, and they must use two sources to support each of those positions. A successful manifesto also anticipates criticism and addresses potential critiques by searching for disconfirming evidence, answering potential questions, accounting for contradictions or flawed logic, or accounting for how personal background shaped your bias toward a position.

The assignment is part biography, part history, part rhetorical analysis, and part current events discussion. You may choose any topics you like, but they must be able to form a cohesive, meaningful manifesto, and they must be positions on which to take a stand. Your rhetorical analysis includes an implied and explicit component. The implied analysis comes with thoughtful selection of supporting resources for your positions and reasoned articulation of your viewpoint. The explicit analysis weighs your position against opposing viewpoints and documents how your opposition’s rhetoric is flawed and faulty. In other words, you must demonstrate (through this manifesto) that you have the ability to construct your own original argument AND meaningfully analyze and critique the arguments of others. You must also demonstrate the ability to synthesize multiple strands of information and viewpoints into a cohesive whole. Your analysis should be expansive, but not superfluous or incoherent. Your intended goal: convince your audience (your peers) to subscribe to your manifesto.

FOR EXAMPLE:

I am a professional educator. Indeed, I am an educator of educators; I teach pre-service teachers how to be elementary and high school teachers. In addition, I teach English. My positionality is that of a college professor who seeks to build an excellent public-school workforce in my state.

Some topics related to that positionality, which I would include in a personal manifesto include:

1) Gun violence in school

2) Charter schools

3) Corporal punishment in schools

4) Common Core curriculum

5) Title IX and gender discrimination in school activities

6) Public investment in education

7) Hidden curriculum

8) School funding

My manifesto would include a history of my involvement in the field of education, including a background narrative of how I formed a position of four of the above-listed topics. I would then choose four topics, state my position on each, and find two sources supporting my position. I would then address the opposing viewpoint.

If I chose gun violence in school, I might express opposition to arming teachers in public schools. If that was my position, I would want sources to demonstrate why not arming teachers was better than arming teachers. I would then analyze how arming teachers is a flawed policy, and that those advocating that policy are not forming a logical argument based on the information available.

REQUIREMENTS:

Your final project submission/text will:

1   Be a minimum of 2000 words (reference list and title page does not contribute to word count)

2   Refer to at least 8 sources, of which no more than 3 may be from: popular press sources (see Syllabus for a list of approved popular press sources) or video/website/audio sources

3   Incorporate the lessons/skills discussed in class to that point and demonstrate facility with said lessons

4   Follow APA formatting guidelines (to include a title page and reference list)

a. APA recommends a simple, readable font like Times New Roman

b. I accept any font resembling Times New Roman or Garamond in a minimum size of 12

5   Be emailed as a MS Word Document by November 1, 2018 by the start of class.

Paper Instructions1. This paper has been designated a “signature assignment” by the History Department. That fact should have no bearing on your work. It simply means that all students in History 101 are completing this same assignment; the results will be used by York College to assess the effectiveness of the course in meeting basic educational objectives.

2. To help gauge your progress on this assignment, you must submit a written “abstract” or outline of your paper at the beginning of class on Tuesday, Nov. 6. This should be a single typed page, consisting of two elements: a 1- or 2-sentence statement of your “thesis” – the main point which you intend to prove in your paper – and a list summarizing at least 8 specific points of evidence which you plan to use in making your case. Unless it is obvious, make sure you clarify the significance of the textual evidence which you cite. You must include evidence from all three sets of documents. This initial part of the assignment will be graded (with a maximum of 5 points) and returned to you with comments to assist you in writing the paper itself.

3. To improve the quality of your work on this assignment, you are encouraged to consult with the peer tutors available to help you in the Writing Center. Each documented visit to the Writing Center (up to a maximum of four for the semester) will earn 1 point of extra credit on your final grade in the course.

4. The completed paper is due at the beginning of class on Tuesday, Nov. 20. It should be 4 to 5 pages in length, typed (in 12-point Times New Roman font), double-spaced, with 1-inch margins. Number your pages. Since everyone is working from the same documents, no bibliography is needed at the end. A separate title page is also not needed.

5. Begin the paper with a short introductory paragraph, in which you present your basic thesis and summarize the direction in which you will be proceeding in order to build your case.

6. In subsequent paragraphs, bring in as much evidence as you can, taken directly from the documents, to support your argument. Everything you cite – whether a direct quotation or a paraphrase – should be identified by the name of the source and the page of the document in which it appears. Use this simplified style of citation, in parentheses: (Gesta, 6) (People of Lucca, 9) (Solomon bar Samson, 1). Quotations of 5 lines or longer should be single-spaced and indented, without quotation marks.

7. Proofread your paper carefully before turning it in. Spelling mistakes, grammatical errors, and other signs of sloppy work will detract from your grade. As this is a formal writing assignment, take care to avoid slang, clichés, and personal pronouns such as “I,” “me,” and “you.”

8. In addition to turning in a hard copy of your paper, you must submit it electronically, via Moodle, on or before the due date, to screen for evidence of plagiarism. According to university policy, “plagiarism” includes “passing off someone else’s words or ideas as one’s own without proper attribution.” Any documented instances of plagiarism will result in a grade of 0 for the assignment.

9. The final paper is worth a maximum of 15 points. Combined with the 5 points available for the abstract, that makes a total of 20 points which you can earn on this assignment (out of 100 for the course overall). For every day a paper is late, 5 points will be deducted from the earned grade

Research Paper Guidelines

This research paper assignment is designed to test your ability to understand and describe a complex problem or issue regarding American political parties, to develop a perspective on this problem, and to make a persuasive argument in favor of your perspective.

Your research paper should follow this standard format, though there is some room for adding sections as needed:

First, an introduction and clear statement of the researcher’s purpose in writing the paper. This section should include an explanation of why this topic is interesting, the central research question you plan to answer, and how it is necessary to better understand the American presidency. It normally includes a literature review, a discussion of research done in the past on the subject, which sets the context for the current effort. This is also the place to define important concepts, and to state the hypotheses to be tested – that is, what you hope to show in the body of the paper. If the paper is thematic and descriptive rather than a quantitative test of hypotheses, a clear statement of the theme is substituted.

Second, a description of the data collection procedures, data sources, measures of variables and methods of analysis (What method did you use to collect information you use to make your case?). The reader should get a clear sense of the material used to develop your paper.

Third, a presentation of the findings. If the paper is descriptive and thematic, this section carries out the theme, presenting the detailed evidence for it. If hypotheses are being tested, the results of the tests are presented and discussed here. Counter-evidence or counter-arguments should also be presented and discussed.

Fourth, a discussion of the inferences and conclusions to be drawn from the findings. They should be related back to the theoretical statements of the first section,  so that it is clear how much ground has been gained by the research. Additional implications for policy making, if applicable, and remaining problems for future research should be discussed here.

Fifth, a brief summary. Important Dates

Writing Tips

Title Pages

Your paper should have one that includes at least the following information: paper title, your name, course name, course number, and the date. If you have a title page, there is no need to repeat the title on first page of text. Try to give your paper a relatively interesting title. “Short Paper” or “Term Paper” or “Interest Group Assignment” are dull. You can put your title in a font that is slightly larger than normal text but avoid extremely large fonts. In other words, 12- 18 point fonts are fine, but 35 point fonts are too large.

Quotation Marks and Indenting Quotes

You should place quotation marks around any direct quotes. If the person you are quoting quotes another source, you should use the double marks for the outer quotation marks and the single marks for the inner quotation marks. Example: Snob magazine reported: “If you aren’t vacationing in Martha’s Vineyard or The Hamptons, then you aren’t vacationing.” If your quote is lengthy (four or more lines), you should indent the quote and use single-spaced text. You do not need to use quotation marks around indented quotes because it is clear from the context and the format.

Ellipses

You should always use ellipses when you remove words from a quotation. You should not use ellipses if your removal of words changes the meaning of the text. If your missing words are in the middle of sentence, you should replace them with three dots separated by spaces as well as preceded and followed by spaces (i.e. …). The spaces make the ellipses look better when typed. Example: “Many older residents find that retirement communities are more . . . peaceful if children do not live on the property.” If you omit the end of sentence before going on to the next sentence in your quotation, you should use four dots instead of three with no space between the first dot and the end of the first sentence and two spaces after the fourth dot (as in the two spaces after a period). The first dot is the period. Example: “The Democrats ran a mean-spirited campaign in 1998…Their radio commercials about church burnings implied that the Republicans are racists.”

It’s or Its?

The first is short for “it is” as in “It’s sad to Republicans that a Democrat lives in the White House.” The second is a pronoun as in “Florida suffered a terrible blow when its orange crop froze last January.”

Brackets

When you excerpt a quote, you may want to substitute a few words of your own for the actual words for clarification purposes. For example, you might want to replace a

pronoun with the actual person or group. You need to put the words that you insert in brackets. Example: [Tom Brokaw] recently wrote a book that lauds the World War II generation. Similarly, if your quote begins in the middle of the sentence, you may capitalize the first letter, but you should put it in brackets. Example: [T]he Iraqi government objected to sanctions.

Guide to Citations

I am a stickler for proper citations. Following are various types. While you are free to choose a particular style, please know though I prefer bibliographic citations in footnotes or endnotes. Please be consistent: use the same style throughout your paper.

Parenthetical Citations

Instead of footnotes, you may choose to use parenthetical citations (though footnotes are also perfectly acceptable). All works cited in parentheses must have full citations in your bibliography at the end of the paper.

The Basic Form. The basic form is really very simple: (Author Year), as in (McGillicutty 1997). If you wish to refer to a specific page in the book, the form is (Author Year: Page). Example: (McGillicutty 1997: 27). If multiple pages need citation simply use dashes or commas as necessary, as in (McGillicutty 1997: 27-32, 64). If you are referring to the author in the text, you should simply put the date, and pages if necessary, in parentheses after the reference to the author’s name. Example: According to McGillicutty (1997: 9), Judge Leon Higginbotham directly contradicted Thernstrom (1987) on the applicability of Section 5 of the Voting Rights Act to redistricting.

Multiple Sources. If you want to cite more than one work at the same time, use semi- colons to separate the cites. Example: (McGillicutty 1997; Holden 1987). If you have more than one work by the same author(s) in one year, you need to designate the work that appears first in your bibliography (the one with the title that begins with the letter that appears earlier in the alphabet) as “a” and the second as “b” and so on. The letter designations should appear in both the bibliography and in your parenthetical citations. Example: (McGillicutty 1997a).

Multiple Authors. You should list all authors for works with three or fewer authors. The order of their names should following the order given by the authors. Example: (Fitch, Fox, and Brown 1992; Smalls and Shakur 1998). If there are more than three authors, give the author’s first name and then “et al.” Example: (Brown et al 1991). No Author. Use the title in place of the author if there is no author. You should feel free to shorten it as long as it is clear and distinct. Example: (LDF Report 1994).

Biblographic Citations

Supreme Court Cases: Allen v. State Board of Elections, 393 U.S. 544 (1969). The number before the “U.S.” refers to the volume; the number after is the page number. The “U.S.” refers the to Supreme Court Reporter. (District and Circuit Court decisions will have something else instead of U.S. between numbers, e.g. F. 2d or F. Supp.) Even if you found your case on the internet (e.g. on Findlaw or Lexis), you should still use this format as the cite will likely give you this citation format somewhere near the beginning of the case. Internet Citations There are lots of ways to cite

Internet Sources

I am not particular about which one you use as long as you follow certain rules:

Cite the exact URL or Internet site. Do not just cite the general home page. The point is to be able to quickly locate the exact page on which you found your information. Even though it is lengthier and more complex, give the full cite of the page so that your reader can go directly to it. For example, if you want to cite the Christian Coalition position paper on gambling, you should cite the exact site, http://www.cc.org/issues/gambling.html, not the general Christian Coalition site, http://www.cc.org/. State the date you visited the page. “Visited 30 January 1999.” or “Visited January 30, 1999.” are both sufficient.

Pages change often, so be sure to cite when you visited the page. Give the title of the page as well as the Internet site. Simply giving the site or URL is not very informative. People don’t speak Internet and you want your paper to be accessible to all. Many pages on the Internet are just replications of paper sources. If this is the case, you should cite it as you would the paper form. For example, if you use an article from The Washington Post, you should simply cite it as you would a normal newspaper article. Sample Bibliographic Form: “Christian Coalition Stand on Gambling.” http://www.cc.org/issues/gambling.html. Visited 19 August 1999. Sample Parenthetical Citation: (Christian Coalition Stand on Gambling 1999) or http://www.cc.org/issues/gambling.html 1999). Personally, I prefer the former format as it is more informative.

Quiz 59

latin american design- topic on Brazil or colombia

Description

These essays are a critical extension of the lectures presented by the instructor, not just a repetition of the lecture. The student determines the specific topic and emphasis based on research material. Each essay is an expansion of the larger and major points of the lecture and readings, with a bibliography and materials selected by each student.
NOT just repeating the material presented in the lecture. These essays can be summaries on the key ideas presented by the readings selected by the student, however, all the essays should contain conclusions and critical reflections carefully elaborated by the student.

The essays must be analytical rather than descriptive in nature, based on research rather than opinions and taste or preferences, without any scholarly foundation or bibliographical support. It is the intent of this format to bridge between the spontaneous class discussion and lectures, and the more scholarly presentation by each student in the last part of the course and the final paper.

Case Study – Debates about the ethics of the Tearoom Trade Study

In the 1960’s PhD student in sociology Laud Humphreys studied men who have sex with other men in public restrooms of city parks. These restrooms were known as “tearooms”. Humphreys got his information by acting as “watch queen”, playing the role of lookout and warning the men if anyone was coming. The men involved did not know he was a researcher.

In addition to recording the sex acts of over 100 men Humphreys had a small subset who knew he was a researcher and spoke to him about sex in public places and homosexuality (which was in the 1960s criminalised in the United States).

Humphreys wanted to understand the relationship between these men’s anonymous homosexual acts and their public lives. He recorded their licence plates as they returned to their cars, and then found out their addresses. A year later, he changed his hair, dress and car and went to the home of 50 of these men. Portraying himself as a social health researcher he interviewed them under false pretences to gain information on their marital status, sexuality and sexual orientations and occupations.

At the time of Humphreys’ research having sex with men was a crime in most of the U.S. Men could be arrested and sentenced to years in prison for it. If the police had got hold of Humphreys’ data or if the identities of the men involved had been revealed, they would have been severely stigmatised, their family lives ruined, they could have lost their jobs, or even been arrested and imprisoned.

In not identifying himself as a researcher Humphreys argued he was doing nothing wrong, he was merely observing behaviour in public spaces and said he masqueraded as a gay “watch queen” so as not to interfere with the research. Most social scientists agree that observing people’s acts in public spaces is not unethical, as long as people are not identified.

On risk that his notes could have been seized to identify men engaged in illegal acts, he said he would have risked going to jail rather than hand them over. Others have said no researcher should have such power over others, no matter how good their intentions are.

Most have found his most serious ethical violation the way he disguised himself and went to men’s homes on a false pretext, invading their privacy. Humphreys argued his deception was justified as the acts were so stigmatised he would not have got the information otherwise.

MSWPG7107 Social work practice with children, young people and families

Assessment 3: Case study analysis: Legislation, policy and multidisciplinary approaches to integrated practice, report (4000 – 4500 words in total). This task assesses the ability of a small group to examine a case study of a family with complex needs and demonstrate how social work professionals from different areas of practice and service contexts, guided by different policy, practice and legislative frameworks, might work together to best support the family.

Groups will be allocated a case study in Seminar 2 and will complete a biopsychosocial assessment in class (this will not be assessed but must be included when submitting this assessment). Group members will be allocated time to present information to each other and work on their report in Seminar 3.

Task specification. This assessment has two parts:

Part 1: Identifying policy, practice frameworks and legislative frameworks that impact practice (500 – 800 words each group member). Develop a written document regarding each of the social work professionals in your group that outlines:

• The professional’s role and service context in which they work

• Practice frameworks, legislative frameworks and policies that inform or guide their practice.

• Suggested process:

1. Allocate each team member a social work role from the list provided (Seminar 2).

2. Individually develop a written overview (In between seminar 2 and seminar 3)

3. Present your individual work to your group in seminar 3, discuss and make any changes (Seminar 3).

Part 2: Developing an integrated approach to family support (2500 per group)

Drawing on relevant practice frameworks and academic literature, develop a plan as to how the professionals in your team might best work together to support and meet the needs of the family. Include:

• A set of guiding principles to ensure your group practice is family centred (drawing on relevant academic literature)

• A discussion about how your professional roles in the team differ and/or overlap

• A plan about how best to facilitate communication within and between the team and the family

• A discussion of the strengths of your multi-disciplinary team approach

• A discussion of the challenges your team might face (including how team members might navigate practice frameworks, legislative frameworks and policies that may not align).

Collate Part 1 and Part2 of this report and submit it via Moodle by 11:59pm 25th of November.

Submissions will be graded using a marking guide and feedback will be provided within 3 weeks. Your report must include full referencing using the APA style.

Business Strategy Assignment 2

EZ-Pleeze Food Company

Company and Industry Profile

EZ-Pleeze is a food company that provides chicken and beef products in the United States. The company started operations in the early 2000s. Their plant and headquarters are located in Statestown, Illinois. The founder was a livestock and poultry farmer for over 25 years. Due to family health issues, he will be stepping down as the CEO of the company at the end of 2015. In order to move past their competitors, they need to develop both a domestic and global expansion strategy for implementation. The primary factors in the poultry and meat industry include—but are not limited to—price, product line, and customer service.

The company went public in 2008. Since EZ-Pleeze started, the market has experienced a downturn, which usually happens every three years. As a result, they attempted to focus on the development of other chicken and beef products in the processed food market. Their market research indicated that consumers wanted healthy foods with great taste. In order to become more competitive and meet consumer demand, the company had to invest in new technology for preparation of the meat products. However, the technology investment for this type of meat preparation costs over 20 million dollars. This required them to raise their prices. Their overall business strategy was to produce value-based products with consistent profit margins rather than traditional (lower value products, whole ice-pack) chickens, which often had volatile profit margins.

Another strategy that EZ-Pleeze used was to lower the price of their processed chicken and beef products in hopes of breaking into the market against their chief competitors, such as Yellow Down Foods and Beefchix Industries. In addition, they had to invest heavily in marketing and advertising, averaging $5–7 million per year. The cost of the marketing campaigns, along with the addition of technology, caused a major financial drain on the company. They laid off 10% of their workforce (both administrative and labor employees) in an effort to remediate the financial damage. The company suffered major net losses from 2008–2010. As a result, shareholders began to dump their stock. In fact, the company was very close to filing bankruptcy. Fortunately, they were able to turn this situation around by reducing their primary revenue channel from supermarkets and moving into the food service market (as an alternative to their competitors). They were able to rebound with several successive years of growth. However, the past three years have indicated a decline in chicken sales but a slight increase in beef sales. The current marketing budget is flat at

$5 million per year and will not increase until 2017. The cost of goods sold is high, and reduced financial stability limits growth and acquisitions.

EZ-Pleeze has been competing for the grocery store retail chains for many years. They offer a diversified portfolio of chicken and beef products and believe that the infrastructure is in place to customize new products. They maintain consistent contact with their customers to ensure that their needs are being met. The company now supplies more than 50% of the largest fast food restaurant chains in the United States, many of which are considering overseas expansion. As of the second quarter of 2015, they are already at 66% of their total sales revenues ($11.4 billion) for FYE 2014.

One of EZ-Pleeze’s beef competitors just announced that they are closing their operations at the end of this year. One of EZ-Pleeze’s chicken competitors was recently acquired by one of their beef competitors. As a result, that beef competitor has now moved up to one of the top five producers of chicken and beef in the United States. Due to the rapid changes within

the industry, they must develop an updated strategic plan for the next three years in order to become one of the top three producers of chicken and beef products in the United States. Research indicates an increased demand for chicken. Chicken has significant price advantages over other meats, demand is increasing for prepared chicken, exporting meats can be done, and new treatments for Salmonella have emerged. Industry challenges include factors such as increased government regulations, labor-intensive working conditions (which have contributed to negative publicity), strong competition from Yellow Down and Beefchix Industries, and thin profit margins. The strategic plan will be presented to the senior executive team for their support. EZ-Pleeze is currently the second largest chicken producer in Mexico with sales of $2.28 billion. (See their sales revenue over the previous three years below).

Company Profile, Philosophy and Outlook

Ez-Pleeze has a hierarchical structure. The division heads report directly to the CEO/Founder. The founder will be stepping down at the end of the fiscal year, ending December 2015. Because they are a publicly traded company, they also have a board of directors, as well as compliance regulations of which to adhere, relevant to business operations and manufacturing processes.

Case Study – The United States Airline Industry

The U.S. airline industry has long struggled to make a profit. Analysts point to several factors that have made the industry a difficult place in which to do business. Over the years, larger carriers such as United, Delta, and American have been hurt by low-cost budget carriers entering the industry, including Southwest Airlines, Jet Blue, AirTran Airways, and Virgin America. These new entrants have used nonunion labor, often fly just one type of aircraft (which reduces maintenance costs), have focused on the most lucrative routes, typically fly point-to-point (unlike the incumbents, which have historically routed passengers through hubs), and compete by offering very low fares. New entrants have helped to create a situation of excess capacity in the industry and have taken share from the incumbent air- lines, which often have a much higher cost structure (primarily due to higher labor costs). The incumbents have had little choice but to respond to fare cuts, and the result has been a protracted industry price war. To complicate matters, the rise of Internet travel sites such as Expedia, Travelocity, and Orbitz have made it much easier for consumers to comparison shop, and has helped to keep fares low.

Beginning in 2001, higher oil prices also complicated matters. Fuel costs accounted for 32% of total revenues in 2011 (labor costs accounted for 26%; together they are the two biggest variable expense items). Many airlines went bankrupt in the 2000s, including Delta, Northwest, United, and US Airways. The larger airlines continued to fly, however, as they reorganized under Chapter 11 bankruptcy laws, and excess capacity persisted in the industry.

The late 2000s and early 2010s were characterised by a wave of mergers in the industry. In

2008, Delta and Northwest merged. In 2010, United and Continental merged, and Southwest

Airlines announced plans to acquire AirTran. In late 2012, American Airlines put itself under Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection. US Airways subsequently pushed for a merger agreement with American Airlines, which was under negotiation in early 2013.

Instructions

Read the short account above of the US airlines industry and prepare a 2500-word report that:

• Conducts a competitive forces analysis of the U.S. airline industry and summarizes its findings in an appropriate diagram. What does the analysis tell you about the causes of low profitability in this industry? What are the principal advantages and disadvantages of using the five forces framework?

• The economic performance of the airline industry seems to be very cyclical. Explain why this might be the case?

• Given your analysis, what strategies do you think an airline should adopt to improve its chances of being persistently profitable?

This assessment focuses primarily on Strategic Position. In preparing your report, you should demonstrate understanding and application of the strategic concepts that are outlined in Part I: Strategic Position of the textbook.

Your report should be structured as follows:

1. Title Page (no page numbering)

2. Executive Summary (page number in Roman Numerals)

3. Table of Contents (page number in Roman Numerals)

4. Introduction (page numbering commences)

a. Overview of the US airline industry

Length:            1500 words

Conditions:      Individual

Weighting:      35%

Requirements

You are required to develop a well-referenced literature review which provides a background to your project. The literature review should examine the factors/construct(s), and discuss all relevant factors/constructs that have been identified by previous researchers which lead to the problem under investigation. Additionally, you are encouraged to synthesise your work, thereby transforming relevant academic literature into an integrated and well-presented articulation of a concept or concepts under investigation. This should be also be summarised visually using a conceptual map.

The literature review will also form the foundation for the final assessment in MNG93218 Industry Research Project Part B, which is a written report where you would make some recommendations based on findings from the research you have undertaken.

Please ensure the majority of references are from current, high-quality sources (primarily peer-reviewed, highly ranked academic journals). The use of books should be kept to an absolute minimum as they are usually dated and not peer-reviewed. Absolutely avoid using information from the internet (e.g. blogs) other than websites of government (Australian Bureau of Statistics) and international organisations (e.g. World Bank, OECD).

You should write the literature review with your target audience (practitioners in the partner organisation) in mind. Therefore, it is imperative to avoid the use of academic jargon and link academic concepts in simple language back to the context of the researched problem in the partner organisation.

Psychology and Education

Freud suggests that difficulty in any stage of development can cause abnormal sexual behavior. Do you agree? Why or why not?

From the psychodynamic viewpoint, the presence of an uncaring mother or the absence of a mother could adversely affect one or more stages of lifespan development. From a modern-day vantage point with its wealth of research and resources, will the presence of an uncaring mother or the absence of a mother necessarily affect the interpersonal relationships of an individual later in life? Why or why not?

Due 11/20/2018 60.00

Synthesis is the act of creating something new from multiple existing entities. Synthesis of research, then, is creating a new idea from existing ideas. It is a process developed through time and practice. In this assignment, you will apply the synthesis process to the journal readings from the first four modules of this course. As you synthesize, remember that Freud and the Psychodynamic and Psychoanalytic theory suggest that early stages of human development have a significant impact on our relationships and our Ego throughout the life span. This leads to the notion that manifested behavior is based on latent problems of the past.

General Requirements:

Use the following information to ensure successful completion of the assignment:

•Refer to the annotated bibliography and outline you created in the Module 2 assignment along with the assignment feedback from your instructor.

•Review the journal readings from the first four modules of this course. You may wish to create annotations for the readings from Modules 3 and 4 for use in the synthesis process.

•This assignment uses a rubric. Please review the rubric prior to beginning the assignment to become familiar with the expectations for successful completion.

•Doctoral learners are required to use APA style for their writing assignments. The APA Style Guide is located in the Student Success Center.

Directions:

Locate the annotated bibliography and outline you created in the Module 2 assignment. Using the outline you developed, the information from the annotated bibliography, and the feedback provided by your instructor, write a paper (2,000-2,250 words) that synthesizes all of the articles assigned in the first four modules of this course. Do that by including the following:

1.A statement of common themes addressed in each of the articles.

2.A statement of the conclusions that can be drawn when the articles are taken together as a single entity. What is the overall message of the group of articles? Focus specifically on the key developmental terms, processes and challenges that individuals may face up through adulthood. Why are the unconscious mind, dreams, and ego defense mechanisms important to understand from the Psychoanalytic perspective? Be sure to address the notion that Freud and the Psychodynamic and Psychoanalytic theory suggest that early stages of human development have a significant impact on our relationships and our Ego throughout the life span.

Please make sure that the final descriptions, discussions, and write-up of the museum project are strictly your own work.  Please write up all three exhibitions, plus the extra credit art exhibition of your choice in 3 to 5 double spaced pages of your total museum project.  Please place photographs in an appendix at the end of your museum project and label them well.
