Transtheoretical model

The transtheoretical model postulates six stages of change used to reform behavior, namely precontemplation, contemplation, preparation, action, maintenance and termination. This model supports that an effective and successful intervention can on be realized when the stage at which an individual is in, has been decided. This, as a primary model provides and encourages co workers to employ self evaluation and make decisions on how to best improve and maintain a productive working environment for all at the workplace (Velicer, et al, 1998).

Progress through these stages can be accounted for by use of the Decisional balance scale, and Self efficacy /Temptation (Velicer, et al, 1998).

Decisional balance involves reflection the individuals relative scaling of the positives and negatives of change. This scale entails weighing the importance of cessation or continuing with a particular behavior (Velicer, et al, 1998).

In self efficacy represents the specific confidence that an individual has to cope with high risk situations without relapse. Situational temptation measure reflects the intensity of cravings to engage in specific behaviors when in difficult circumstances (Velicer, et al, 1998).

 

Theory of Reasoned Action and Theory of Planned Behavior

Theory of reasoned Action is related to voluntary behavior and the theory of planned behavior related deliberate behavior (Ajzen, I., 1991).

In compliance with hand hygiene, an infection prevention initiative is ignored numerous times by health professionals though known to them as the best prevention to transmission of infection.

This is due to the fact that they have developed a hierarchal risk order to determine whether the use of hand wash is necessary or not. Adherence to work ethics is therefore dependant o altering behavior perceptions. Therefore compliance with infection prevention strategies is tied up in behavior modification and cultural attitudes that are resistant to change (Ajzen, I., 1991).
