For this assignment, we will be examining the last of the four P’s of the marketing mix: Price. This is a key concept in marketing, as the price of a product has a huge impact on a consumer’s decision to purchase. One of the most basic pricing strategies is simply to charge a small mark-up above the costs. This is known as a cost-plus strategy. However, as you can imagine, pricing strategies are typically a lot more complex than this. What if you are selling a brand-new product and you don’t have any competitors? Should you still charge just a slight amount above cost? What if you are trying to capture market share from some strong competitors? Or do you want to sell some very cheap lower end products in your line, and at the same time some higher or medium end products?
Beyond the simple cost-plus pricing strategy, we will be looking at a wide variety of other commonly used strategies as well as situations when these strategies are best used. Some of the strategies we will examine in this module include penetration pricing, price skimming, psychologic pricing, and value-based pricing. These are just a few of the many different types of pricing strategies and tactics available. In addition to learning the different strategies in this module you also need to pay close attention to the disadvantages and advantages of each strategy. The key point of this module is not just memorizing the different strategies, but also knowing when to use these strategies when faced with various situations.
You will also explore the recent trends in marketing such as social media marketing, mobile marketing, and app marketing. The legal, social, and ethical issues related to marketing practices should also be considered. You will have an understanding of the global marketing issues and the potential careers in marketing.
