Task Detail

In this assignment, you will investigate and collate information to prepare a presentation and essay relating to a contemporary professional practice issue that has the potential to impact on the transition process into the role of a registered nurse in clinical practice. You will draw on relevant, credible literature to support strategies to address this issue and you will apply and contextualise knowledge and understanding of professional nursing issues in clinical practice.

You must choose one question relating to professional nursing issues from the following:

Option 1

Jessica worked in an Geriatric Assessment and Rehabilitation Unit as an AIN during her nursing degree program. She was very keen to work as an RN in the same Geriatric Assessment and Rehabilitation Unit, as she felt that she would have the knowledge, power and professionalism to be able to make a difference. The Nurse Manager welcomed her enthusiasm, however, Jessica felt that she had not been able to make any changes in her first month as a Graduate RN. Things like buzzers not being answered, patients’ privacy not protected during showers, medication left on tables and patients ‘ordered around’ by staff were of most concern to her.

Option 2

Ben is working in an Emergency Department (ED) in a large metropolitan hospital as a Graduate RN. He previously undertook a 3-week placement as a student in another smaller suburban ED, which he found to be stimulating and fulfilling. This ED, however, is much busier and noisier. It takes the most seriously ill patients, and at times staff appear to be irritable and unapproachable when trying to keep up with the patient needs. Ben feels that with the large number of unfamiliar staff he has little consistent support and is worried that he cannot give quality care, master the digital technology and that he will be forced to work outside of his scope of practice.

Using quality evidence, describe the different sources of hostility and aggression that may be encountered in an Emergency Department (include all sources of hostility and aggression). By leading a scenario based critical discussion about Ben’s concerns, develop strategies that would assist Greg to feel empowered as a Graduate Registered Nurse and transition effectively in a hostile environment.
