Poverty as an Aspect of Social Stratification

Article Summary

This article is a study that aims at establishing the correlation between household`s poverty and food security in South West Nigeria. The aspect of food insecurity in the sub-Saharan Africa has been and continues to be a big challenge to the attainment of the region`s anticipated sustainable development, and to the global community as a whole (Abiodun et al. 28). In order to establish the relationship between poverty levels and food insecurity at the household level in this region, the authors of this article selected 18 rural communities of the Southwest Nigeria, and gathered data from a sample of 420 rural farming households. In addition, a structured questionnaire with relevant questions regarding the socio-economic features of the respondents were collected and analyzed using linear regression method. The empirical findings of the study revealed that high poverty levels among the rural farming households was a major contributing factor to the household`s food insecurity (Abiodun et al. 34). In addition, the study established that education levels, age and household size highly influenced the amount of household produce. Precisely, households with a higher number of members had lower food security status compared to those which had smaller sizes. In addition, households whose members had lower educational levels were reported to have high food insecurity status compared to those which had educated members.
