Organizations and the System Concept
Social scientists focus on understanding human organizations so as to describe what is important. They explain the human development cycle and fail to predict their outcome and effectiveness. Currently, the social scientists have introduced the idea of common sense approaches to understanding and changing organizations. They depend on the idea that location and nature of an organization are offered by its name (Katz and Robert 14). Additionally, they rely on the assumption that organizations are based on goals. Common sense approach has different key characteristics; they include its location and identification, the aim of its designers, leaders or the leading members. Apart from the features of common senses approach, the article maintains that many organizations depend on social impacts of their output for energy regeneration (Katz and Robert 18). In this case, there are two fundamental criteria for categorizing social systems and defining their functions.
First, the article highlight the important characteristics common sense approach. One of the principal features is its location and identification. Individuals try to understand how to know that they are dealing with an organization. Also, they seek to understand the boundaries of the company (Katz and Robert 14). The existence of popular names that label the social organization is an advantage and disadvantage. They highlight the stereotypes concerning companies instead of specifying their role structure, psychological nature, and boundaries (15). The second key features of common sense approach are the height of the needs of its designers, leaders or main members.
Again, the explanation of the method is of help and at the same time a hindrance. It is important to use the source of information, as the human purpose is deliberately included in organizations and recorded in the social compact (Katz and Robert 15). Many large-scale or companies rely on the social effects of their output energy renewal. According to the chapter, the two main criteria for identifying social systems and determining their functions include identifying the pattern of energy exchange or people’s activity (Katz and Robert 18). The method is important as it leads to some output. Another approach used is ascertaining the manner in which the output is changed into energy that reactivates the pattern. Negative feedback is an example of a common type of information input that exists in all systems.
An example of feedback principle is the thermostat that controls the room temperature. The particular case shows a regulatory device that works based on negative feedback (Katz and Robert 22). The information from the article helps in understanding the current organizations. The open-system approach is different from the common-sense approaches that appears to accept familiar names as well as stereotypes as most important aspects of an organization. The contingency approach is an example of common sense approach (DuBrin 27). According, to the theory there is no an effective way to manage behavior within an organization.
The article is relevant as it focuses on organizations and common sense approach. The article maintains that companies are a unique class of open systems and have diverse characteristics (Cox 67). They have different structures that differentiate them from other open systems. However, organization behavior is different for every company. The location and nature of a company are based on their names.
The review shows that organizations have different characteristics. They have unique properties that define them; however, they have other similarities with other open systems. In many cases, there is a problem in understanding a company based on its location and identification. Another issue in understanding a company is the aim of the developer, leaders and the leading members. The outcomes of a company are explained through the activities of those involved.
