My personal philosophy of aging is that it is a natural and inevitable process that we all go through, and it is important to embrace it and make the most of it. My definition of aging is the process of growing older and the changes that come with it, both physical and psychological. One of my hopes for aging is to maintain good health and independence for as long as possible. One of my fears is losing mental or physical function as I get older. One current media item that reflects a positive and accurate image of aging is the commercial for the clothing store Old Navy, which features a group of older adults participating in various activities and looking stylish and active. This commercial accurately portrays aging as a time of continued activity and engagement in life, rather than a time of decline and isolation. It also challenges stereotypes about older adults being out of touch with fashion and trends.
One current media item that reflects a negative and erroneous image of aging is a TV show that portrays older adults as being forgetful, dependent, and unable to participate in activities or make decisions for themselves. This is not an accurate portrayal of aging because it reinforces harmful stereotypes about older adults and ignores the diversity and individuality of the aging experience. Many older adults are still active, independent, and capable of making their own decisions.
One specific disease that an older adult may experience is Alzheimer’s disease.
A. Definition: Alzheimer’s disease is a progressive brain disorder that causes difficulty with memory, thinking, and behavior. It is the most common cause of dementia in older adults.
B. Symptoms: Early symptoms of Alzheimer’s disease may include forgetting recent events or conversations, difficulty solving problems, and confusion about time and place. As the disease progresses, symptoms may include difficulty with basic tasks, changes in personality and behavior, and difficulty speaking, swallowing, and walking.
