Media Studies

Observations of the readings

The reading, “television and new media” has turned out as one that explores the changes that have arose as a result of globalization, in terms of scope, dynamics and scale of social interrelationships. Generally, television has played a great role in communicating the relationship between different countries and cultures all over the world (Ashuri, T., 2010, 105). For the cultural roots reading, it can be seen that nationalism came into being during the eighteenth century.

Criticism

I concur with the author`s argument that the emergence of nationalism can be well contemplated through the alignment of cultural systems that arose with it, rather than through political ideologies or the erosion of religious thoughts. On the other hand, I support the argument that the television industry has contributed to the preservation of the proper distance between global and national, and the alien and familiar, through its core activities of broadcasting world events, lives of public figures, among others (Ashuri, T., 2010, 108).

Queries / questions on your readings Conclusions

For the television article, does the strategy of coproduction has the full potential of covering the unknown to the audience, or there can be still another additional strategy that can employed? In addition, does the improvement of communication technologies contributed to the emergence of nationalism?

Comparison between the two readings

These two readings have pointed out ways or factors that enhance interaction between populations, such as media and languages. However, one article highly focused on the emergence of nationalism, while the other one focuses on the role of television.

Objections

Though the emergence of nationalism has been well explained through the analysis of cultural systems that preceded it, I think the erosion of religious modes thoughts could have explained it better. Individuals changed. Consecutively, I disagree with the influence that televisions have on morals. In most cases, televisions diffuse negative morals to the viewers, especially the youths.

Readings and my everyday experience and current affairs

The television keeps me updated with current affairs, especially currency exchange rates. Through this media I manage to know the necessary time to buy or sell my shares.
