Local and State Political Behavior and Processes
When it comes to political affairs, individuals tend to have different viewpoints or opinion. No matter the cultural background, age, religion, or level of education, individual have their unique take on the relationship between people and politics. Political participation refers to various voluntary activities where members of the society directly or indirectly share in the selection of rulers. Such activities are guided by public policies. The right to participate is an important tool for democratic government as it involves accountability, equality, consent, and popular sovereignty. However, there are different factors which can positively or negatively influence political participation of a given country or state. This paper will outline these factors and the manner in which they influence political participation.
Youth Political Participation
It have been noted that majority of the youths are not involved in formal politics due to their belief concerning the impact they make from voting (Farthing 191). Others may decline to participate due to the feeling of indifference or unintended ignorance regarding to the subject matter. In addition, many of the youth have certain perspective that their voting will make no difference. They have a strong believe that no matter whom they vote; their lives will remain the same. On the other hand, the low turnout of political participation from the youths may be contributed by intimidation or lack of enough knowledge on the political system (Farthing 188). In order to curb this problem, policy makers, politicians, as well as the parents must work together and encourage the youths to join the political realm in hope of broadening their political knowledge. While others have suggested that the youths have not been involved in political participation, they are others argue that youths have given their contribution through new information and technologies. This innovation has the capability of connecting in new ways. In addition to this, the new innovation has made it political action simple, faster, and universal. With the different innovations, many argue that the youths have created and reshaped new forms of politics (Farthing 185). An increase of youth’s participation can result to realization of various changes in the society. More so, voting is the right that shapes the world we live and it would be different if everybody participates towards its growth.
Television programs can have both positive and negative influence to the viewers. It has been proved that under certain conditions, exposure to TV programs like “The Daily Show” can easily influence public participation to politics, public knowledge, public opinion, and more so, political participation (Cao & Brewer 94). Although, many people view the comedy shows for them to get entertained, majority end up gaining a lot of knowledge about politics. As a way of entertainment, the shows like The Daily Show have been found to involve more people to the world of politics (Cao & Brewer 91). Those who get more information and develop confidence with different political issues, they are more likely to participate and have more political interests. On the other hand, political interest plays an impact to the voter’s turnout. On the other hand, other findings have related programs such as “The Daily Show” to have a negative influence to its viewers (Cao & Brewer 91). To be specific, humors within the show that mock a character of a certain politician or policy initiatives tend to make viewers interpret such politicians in a more negative way. Emphasizing constantly on the ridiculousness that exist within the politics, the show make the viewers to be develop an increased distrust, thus less likely to participate politically.
Political culture refers to believes, norms, and values that citizens shared about their government. Political culture is one of the factors that determine how the political process plays out. State’s political culture is best expressed by citizen’s attitudes towards the government and public representatives (Connor & Christopher 639). The citizens may have distrust with the government and this is strongly connected to how people feel about the overall status of the country. If people lack interest on government issues, this leads to low political participation by citizens towards the current affairs. Political culture have the aspect of free will which is based on right to believe what you want, and freedom of speech. For example, it is right to say that every American believes the current constitution fits to the system, but they want they want to change it in order to suit all their needs. In addition, Nevadans have chosen different channel to define their politics, their economy as well as their politics. Even before ratification of their constitution in early 1864, the Nevadans defined their way of life and shaped their political structure to counteract interests from other unfamiliar groups (Connor & Christopher 634). Therefore, political culture plays a huge role in maintaining order in a state and without it, our nation would fall apart.
The number of government representatives can influence people’s political participation. America is a land of mixed races and each group want to be represented to the national government (David & Conklin 27-33). For instance, some claims that black majority district represent a form of discrimination and violation of equal protection clause. When black voters are pulled out of the surrounding Democratic districts, and direct them to the new majority-minority districts, this reduces the influence of blacks within legislature. The few members selected to represent blacks may have less incentives to respond to minority interest. In fact, many blacks were arguing that there was no need to create minority districts. However, the creation of majority-minority districts in early 1990s has lead to increase of the black law makers especially in the South America. For instance, in 1992, 91 percent of members of the chamber’s majority party were from the black lawmakers (David & Conklin 22-27).
The Politics in States and Community
People are always curious to know how the states carry out various activities that have direct effect to their lives. For instance, citizens wants to understand how the state and the local governments have made progress in providing public services such as highways, education among other services (Dye & Susan 3). They are interested on policies imposed on immigrants, transportation sector, health and well fare, education, civil rights, illegal immigration among other policies. Curiosity about the different policies makes people to develop more interest about the political issues that directly or indirectly affect them.
Higher political participation may not guarantee t hat democracy will always flourish. However, the government can be held account and represent people’s demands. On the other hand, political participation ensures that citizens are represented in policy making process and participate actively in the politics of the states. As more citizens engage in the business decision making process, few group is left out, hence democratic process gets legitimized on a wider domain.
