What is Time Management?   Ask the question “what is time management” in different parts of the world and you’re likely to get very different answers. The western perspective is related to the chronos interpretation of time as linear progression. This view of time as the inevitable passing of seconds and minutes, as on a clock, the chronology of existence, is based on the Greek word Kronos. This word refers to time as linear and sequential, something which we spend our lives trying to control, but which in reality dominates us. We battle against losing or wasting time as it passes us by, causing us stress and unhappiness along the way.   The eastern perspective is related to the Kairos view, which considers time as a cyclical or seasonal passage. Time viewed from a Kairos perspective is referred to in different ways, such as appropriate time, now time or quality time. It is like a compass giving direction, bringing opportunities to learn, to contemplate values, to deepen relationships, and to appreciate life. This has an emphasis on quality rather than the quantity of “clock” time.   The time management industry tries to sell us time-saving techniques. These are based on the idea that we simply don’t have enough time to do everything we need, or want to do. These time saving techniques may shave seconds, minutes or even hours from the time we spend on tasks, but do they all work? It’s not time itself we have to manage, instead it’s our perception and understanding of time that can sometimes be our enemy (Koch 1999).   When thinking about which time management techniques will work for you, ask yourself this: What directs your view of time? The clock or the compass? Once you have decided this, the rest should fall into place. Perhaps the best way to manage time is to value its passage, not to confront it.   Adapted from: The Happy Manager website (2020).
