Higher education in the United States has proven to be a formidable enterprise and established knowledge industry that contributes significantly to social and economic development. Higher education’s mission is to produce effective graduates, competent leaders in their respective professions as they become valuable members of society and responsible citizens of our country. Higher education is considered very critical to states’ economic and national development. It has produced professionals in diverse fields of our economy, such as research, the adoption of technology, and the different study methods invented in higher education, which led to the rapid emergence of higher education. Higher education focuses on leadership, organizations, and governance leading to a huge increase in institutional research that focuses on institutional trends over time. Higher education institutions are tasked with preparing students for higher education positions, both as scholars and auctioneers. The various degree programs offered in higher learning institutions produce a significant portion of the future leadership, especially in small and midsized institutions and those entering areas of public policy analysis, evaluation and research, and the other scholarly roles that faculties and administrators in higher learning engage in (Simpson, 2000).
As an aspiring economist, I know higher education will play a huge part in molding me into a leader, focusing on innovative critical thinking and contributing positively to running the economy. By being in higher learning institutions, I will have a reasonable chance to study, learn, and research, thereby expanding my knowledge and skills in my field of study. The knowledge that I will acquire will be applied to analyze my country’s economic situation and establish trends and offer viable economic advice to society. As an economist, I will be involved in the research, collection, and analysis of data to develop viable information for identification and monitor economic situation trends. The advice would allow people to make sound economic decisions and thereby reduce the associated risks. My aim in pursuing higher education is to make a difference in my life, family, and society by ensuring sound and informed economic decisions.
Relative to most other higher education systems globally, the US system can be described as centralized and independent from the federal government. These institutions have been expanding over time to serve students of diverse backgrounds. The effort is motivated by the belief in education’s power to create economic and economic mobility and promote moral, social values, all aimed at making higher education accessible to all people in society. The current society has appreciated the importance of higher education and its roles in ensuring social and economic development. However, there have been challenges in offering higher education, which has slowed its access and made it uneven. Higher education should be affordable and attractive to all students, even those from families with low and modest incomes. They are supposed to be all-inclusive in advancing research and discovering public values as they assume their fundamental responsibility for society’s social, cultural, and overall health (Arizona State University, 2018). Higher education in the US is one of the largest enterprises that have a huge impact on society.
There has been an increase in pressure calling for cost reduction and keeping the tuition increase small to accommodate more students. The higher education institutions should devise innovative strategies that will ensure improved productivity and efficiency for its massification. There is a need for society to make full use of the higher learning institutions by generating useful information that can be used in planning, administration, assessment, and future design of the vast higher education systems.
