Handling the Pandemic

  1. What is Vaccine Equity?

At its simplest, vaccine equity can be referred to as the distribution of vaccines to all countries in the world in an equitable way. Normally, vaccine equity can be helpful when it comes to managing and controlling infectious diseases. Many of the health organizations worldwide, both national and international, have the aim of ensuring good health to people around the world especially during this time of the COVID-19 pandemic. To achieve this, it would be important to ensure that vaccines are distributed equally to all countries in the world. Many of the countries affected with the COVID-19 are still developing and are not able to make their vaccines or if they can make the vaccines, they may not be able to make enough doses to cater for all their citizens due to factors such as poor technology. Vaccine equity involves producing enough vaccines, that can be used for immunizing a larger percentage of the affected individuals in the world, then distributing and administering the vaccines in an equitable and orderly manner to all the counties in the world.

  • How can vaccine equity contribute to controlling the COVID-19 pandemic?

As already mentioned, vaccine equity would help ensure that all countries, including the developing countries, can acquire vaccines more efficiently and easily. Therefore, there will be no exception in the case of the COVID-19 pandemic. COVID-19 has become a very serious global health concern and if countries continue with the practice of vaccine nationalism instead of adopting vaccine equity, many countries especially the developing ones will suffer. Most of the affected people will not be able to access the vaccines and this will lead to an increase in the spread of the COVID-19. Consequently, the cases will continue increasing worldwide even in the countries with the vaccines as their citizens will be interacting with the ones from the unvaccinated countries. “The United Nations’ Global Goal 3 calls for good health and well-being for all, which cannot be achieved if countries adopt a mentality of vaccine nationalism rather than supporting the global response” (Liao).

  • Who are the targets of this initiative?

The main aim of the vaccine equity initiative is “to overcome the pandemic and the inequalities that lie at the root of so many global health challenges, as well as drive a global recovery” (World Health Organization). To this end, it is clear that the targets of the vaccine equity initiative are all people in the world including, the healthcare providers, the patients, and any other people that might be affected by this pandemic. As already stated, the COVID-19 pandemic has become a major global health concern today. Due to this, many measures have been put in place to help in preventing the spread of this disease. Vaccine equity is one of the measures and it is targeting all the people in the world because the pandemic affects all people in the world. Some of the most common ways used for preventing this disease include wearing face masks, maintaining social distance in places with a lot of people, and covering coughs and sneezes with tissue paper, and disposing of them properly. It is also advisable that people should wash their hands regularly with alcohol-based hand sanitizers. Just like all these preventive measures and initiatives, the vaccine equity initiative is targeting all people and, in the world, to avoid further spread of this disease and to achieve global recovery.

  • Is the vaccine equity initiative progressing? What are the arising obstacles, if any?

The vaccine equity initiative is currently progressing due to the huge support it is receiving from many people and various health organizations, both national and international. For instance, apart from the World Health Organization, the vaccine equity initiative has been supported by the International Council of Nurses (“ICN Supports WHO’s Vaccine Equity Declaration, Warning That Delay To Global Roll Out Of Vaccines Potentially Catastrophic”).  The latest survey conducted in 54 countries by the International Council of Nurses found out that there is “a stark divide between high- and low-income countries and significant regional gaps in vaccination programs which risks propagating the spread of new variants of the virus” (“ICN Supports WHO’s Vaccine Equity Declaration, Warning That Delay To Global Roll Out Of Vaccines Potentially Catastrophic”). To this end, some of the challenges that might be experienced by the vaccine equity initiative may be due to the fact that the number of developed countries that can produce the vaccines is less and the demand is high.
