The focus of this unit is on developing an understanding of the role of the nurse in recognising and responding to factors which impact on a child’s growth, development and wellbeing. Immunisation represents an important intervention for minimising risk and promoting health in infants, children and adolescents. In this assessment task you will explore the case of a parent who is reluctant to immunise her child, and will explore the current evidence regarding immunisation safety. You will also develop strategies for communicating with parents around sensitive and values-laden topics. 

Scenario:You are undertaking a community health clinical placement in a maternal-child health (MCH) clinic. You are observing a routine health check for Beth, a 12 month old infant, who is accompanied but her mother Ashley. The MCH nurse notes that although Beth has had her routine immunisations according to the Immunisation Schedule, she is also eligible for a seasonal influenza vaccine. When the nurse offers to provide the influenza vaccination free of charge, Ashley declines. Ashley states: “I had the Flu shot when I was pregnant and it gave me the flu, so I don’t want Beth to have it.”

Discuss the current evidence that the MCH nurse should provide to Ashley, relating to the risks and benefits of the seasonal flu immunisation in infants, and the risks associated with refusing this immunisation.
