Studying the humanities in the field of health professions has immense value. Humanities provide an avenue for healthcare professionals to understand their patients on a deeper level. Humanities teach us how to communicate, empathize, and understand cultural differences and experiences. For example, learning about the history of medicine and healthcare can help healthcare professionals understand how medicine has evolved and the current medical practices.
The study of art, literature, music, dance, and other topics from different time periods can enhance both personal and career life. Art, literature, and music can offer a different perspective and serve as a form of therapy to help healthcare professionals manage stress and burnout. For example, poetry can help healthcare professionals process emotions and empathize with their patients’ experiences. Additionally, the study of different cultures and their art and literature can help healthcare professionals understand and respect cultural differences, ultimately improving patient care.
Personally, I find literature meaningful in my life. Reading books helps me unwind and escape from reality for a while. It also helps me understand the experiences of others and empathize with them. In my career, I find music meaningful. Music has a therapeutic effect on patients, and I find it can help calm them down or distract them during medical procedures.
One work of literature that is meaningful to me is “The Kite Runner” by Khaled Hosseini. The book tells the story of two friends growing up in Afghanistan and how their lives change due to political unrest. The book helped me understand the experiences of individuals living in Afghanistan and the impact of war on their lives. It also taught me the importance of empathy and standing up for what is right.

I appreciate your insights on the value of studying the humanities in healthcare. I agree that learning about different cultures and art forms can help healthcare professionals understand and respect cultural differences and ultimately improve patient care. I also find it interesting that you find music meaningful in your career. I had not thought of music in that way before but can see how it can be therapeutic for patients. Have you ever used music in your patient care, and if so, what was your experience?
I also enjoyed your choice of “The Kite Runner” as a meaningful work of literature. I think it’s important to read books that offer different perspectives and help us understand the experiences of others. The book’s themes of empathy and standing up for what is right are also valuable lessons for healthcare professionals to keep in mind in their patient care.
