Introduction

The
twentieth and the twentieth century have been a transitional century as far as
women and their roles in the structures of political, economic and social life.
Before the twentieth century, the women were deeply divided by the elements of
race, class, religion, region, and ethnicity. That means that the women have
not been in the position of identifying with one another. That implies that the
relationship between the women and the element of their solidarity has waxed
and waned over time. From a historical perspective, it is imperative to
stipulate that the twentieth century has experienced a substantial wave of feminist
activism. Resultantly, that activism has resulted in the surge of change as far
as women status in the economy is concerned. The preferred changes in the
women’s status are highly affiliated with the persistent activism resulting in
the American woman being a full participant in the political and economic life[1].
Different arguments have been made regarding the attempts by the civil society
to resolve the issue of women participation in the American society.
Phenomenological approaches have been used to facilitate a deeper understanding
of the individual women’s experiences especially in the twentieth and the
twenty-first century. The research intended to conduct an in-depth analysis of
the women experiences in the 20th century.

In
the process of providing crucial insights regarding the changes that have been
experienced by women in the twentieth century, the research will incorporate
responses acquired from a series of interactive sessions with the American
woman including varied age brackets. That is; those who are aged and could have
been there during the era where education rights, as well as, equality rights
regarding employment were enacted. The use of the feedbacks from a cluster of
women will facilitate and strengthen the arguments made in the research paper.
The arguments and experiences shared will then be aligned with the structural
changes that have been transpiring in the United States. A set of issues will
be addressed in the research paper regarding the status and experience of women
in the United States. It will address the experiences of the families of the
respondent women, their childhood, their education, marriage, motherhood, and
work. Accordingly, it will be elementary to document the perceptions that these
women have regarding the women’s place in the American society. Accordingly,
the research will focus on each issue at a time.

Evaluation
of Families and Their Experiences in the 20th Century

After
engaging in an interactive session with the close female relations of varied
ages, as well as, the already build database from the neighborhood, the family
experiences exemplified the magnanimous changes that have occurred as far as
women in the American society are concerned. Some of the main elements of
family experiences are based on the manner in which they were treated in the
20th century. The respondents, in this case, are aged between 20 to 75 years of
age. Also, the respondents are from different cultural and racial backgrounds.
However, as it turns out, the experiences of these women has been almost
similar besides the cultural expectations that may differ from one race to the
other. 

According
to the women, the 20th century was a tough experience but was a transformation
that each woman ought to have appreciated. For instance, amongst those who are
aged between 50 and 75 years and hail from the African American race, they
argue that their families have remained under economic suppression since they
were denied a right to education and as a result of the poor economic
situation, it became hard for them to resume school after the enactment of the
Education Act of 1972 that did forbid any form of gender discrimination, as far
as, education programs were concerned. From a historical perspective, the
enactment of this Education Act eradicated and guaranteed a right to an
education that was free from sex discrimination[2].
Resultantly, the women and the girls have been making remarkable progress
towards achieving equality in education and in impacting the society. The women
argue that despite the fact that they were deprived of the rights to easy
access to education, their daughters have expressed contentment in the manner
through which the issue of education is being handled. In fact, the number of
educated girls who are earning handsomely is increasing gradually considering
that some of the young teenage girls are either in high schools and colleges.
In light the new American society and families, the women are performing well
in academics and supporting their families as would be expected of the boy
children. The recognition of women in some of the families, according to the
respondents, is a clear depiction of the extent in which the position of the
women in the American society.

A
Review of Women’s Childhood

The
experiences of these women in their childhood express the occurrences that took
place in the mid-twentieth century. For the women who were born during the
early 1930s and 1940s, they experienced their mothers being incorporated in the
employment sector especially during the world wars where the men were
participating in the world wars. According to history, the women were said to
have performed recommendable well to such an extent that they were recruited to
work in areas where only the men were believed to be the only ones who could
perform. Hence, they experienced their mothers and grandmothers working hard in
complex professions include working as mechanics, tank drivers, fire engine
drives, plumbers and even building of ships[3].
However, the government failed to appreciate their services by laying them off
and even failing to recognize their role in national buildings, an issue that
resulted in depletion of their economic prowess[4].
These children, who are currently old women, argue that the experience in their
childhood to some extent created in them a zeal to one day fight for their
right to equal treatment, as far as, work was concerned.

However,
for the women aged 20 to 30 years of age, their childhood experience was
different. They experienced their mothers already being incorporated in the
task force and being allowed to engage in any sector or field of education.
From a psychological perspective, that experience has resulted in the gradual
commitment to participate actively in the economic sector as workers[5].
From a historical context, it is clear that the brief sketching affiliated with
women’s conditions at the beginning of the mid-twentieth century manages to
point to the several privileges and rights that the young women in the current
era experience. The expansion in the women’s education sector and the massive
movement, according to the aged women that I integrated with have resulted in
the establishment of a ground relevant for massive suffrage movement that has
facilitated the enactment and follow-up on the rights to many opportunities for
the women.
