This piece of dissertation writing is to be written in past­tense and to include the results chapter –
then the specific areas of discussion chapter – both should be set out out in a professional manner &

The main aims and objectives of this dissertation are to test nano­silica nS which is a nanomaterial,
silica fume SF otherwise known as micro­silica which is a micro material against an ordinary Portland
cement mix OPC to see the improved properties/effects that the addition of nS and SF has compared
to OPC on its own. Different % ratios of both nS & SF were added 3, 5, 7, 10% based on the volume
of OPC keeping the water cement ratio W/C 0.45 at a constant throughout. Testing was carried out
on the 7thh & 14th day (ie the age of the concrete).
All mixes were constructed with just water, OPC and different % replacement of the OPC of which
both nS & SF were added in separate mixes. No sand or aggregates were used in mixes during
testing. Therefore making it a concrete/mortar paste type mix
Aims and objectives of dissertation include?
­testing for potential flexural strength improvements by using nS at different % as a replacement of
OPC compared to that of SF & OPC at the same W/C ratio 0.45 at the early stage of both 7 and 14
day old concrete/mortar mix. Also to see how the different % of nS affect the strength properties in
relation to the SF and to discover the most beneficial % of nS to use.

the average compressive strength of the nS, SF & OPC at 7 & 14 days.

Analyse, evaluate and interpret the results given with respect to the different % of nS and SF as
substitutes for OPC, explain why for example the nS is stronger with regards to the chemical reaction
that is taking place & likewise with the SF. Also look at the percentage increase in strength between
the 7 & 14th day different reading s for the different mixes. Which has the highest­weakest increase
in compressive strength between 7 & 14 day testing. Give reasoning why some mixes have a higher
compressive strength increase than others and remember there is no sand or aggregate in any of the
test mixes carried out. Also compare and analyse similar strength readings from different mix ratios
giving a calculated personal reason/explanation why you think this is.

Using the table from (Book22nScomp&flexWC) produce and insert a line graph starting at 0 using the
flexural testing results in the given excel document so that is clear and easy for the reader to interpret

Relationship between Flexural Strength v Compressive Strength in concrete
Identify & explain the general relationship between flexural & compressive and the main factors that
influence it ie W/C ratio etc, use the results provided as a reference where possible. As the w/c ratio
can significantly influence this include/make reference to results obtained from the different w/c
ratios used during the testing of different % nS as a cementitious to help explain this to the reader.
Also include description and reasons why a high % of nS or SF as a cementitious replacement effects
it also (ie when a higher % of nS or SF is added to the mix – identify and explain the reaction that
takes place in the mix hence impacting on the flexural & compressive strength of the mix.
Include table of results given in excel (Book22flexVcomp0.45) and briefly analyse the results for 7
and 14 day testing that was carried out in relation to both the flexural & compressive strength of the
different mixes at the same w/c ratio of 0.45 . Identify and briefly describe where appropriate the
relationship between flexural and compressive strength readings
Flow Chart Test – BS EN1015­3:1999
Give a brief introduction as to why this is used for testing concrete/mortar within the industry and
what the outcome of the results tell us about thx concrete/mortar or paste mix etc
Insert excel (Book22flowtest) as provided and make comment on the results comparing them to each
other etc. describe how the % of nS added and w/c ratio of the mixes affected the workability.
Describe that no readings were obtained for the 0.35 w/c ratio mixes as the mix was too sticky and
that once the superplasticiser was added to the mix it was too had to control the workability of the
mix and it therefore ended up too viscous/runny to conduct testing. Additionally no readings were obtained for the 10% nS mix @ w/c ratio 0.45 as it was too sticky. Also no reading for 3% nS mix as
this was too runny.
5.0 DISCUSSION & CONCLUSION CHAPTER – 2,200 words

Comparison of Secondary & Primary Research Findings (including areas of consensus & conflict)–
references are required for everything found with relation to the results the regard to what the
researcher found from the results included in excel books provided
include reference that show improved compressive & flexural strength of concrete/mortar using nS
over that of OPC at early age describing how and why it is stronger with references to back the the
readings recorded from testing by the researcher at a similar % of nS used as a replacement of
cement for both flex and comp testing.
Also include reference that contradicts what the researcher found from his results by showing
improved strength of a concrete/mortar mix using a higher % of nS as a cement replacement (this
can be a mix with other additive’s used in the concrete/mortar mix also and/or higher w/c rations
etc.), Critically evaluate and give reasoning why these differ from what (I) the researcher found from
my results
Include a description with references to back up information about how the % increase of nS used
and w/c ratio of mixes affect the workability of nS used in concrete/mortar mix.
Interpretation – no referencing in this sub­chapter
Interpretation of the results/findings mean. Ie, making reference to what the researcher found to be
the best % of nS to use as a replacement with relation to increase in strength of concrete/mortar.
Also describe the significance of how the w/c ratio of nS mix affected the strength factors etc.
Basically an overview of the secondary and primary research that has been collected written out so
that the reader can understand what it all means without referencing it.!!! ( ie using – the
primary/secondary information obtained or like etc when making reference)
Implications for the construction industry
This section will look at how the research and results conducted using nS can implement the
construction industry. Ie the benefits of increased strength of concrete, durability and how they can
affect the construction industry in a positive way etc also include other benefits of nS and how they
can improve the construction industry ie increased service life of structures , improved environmental
impact etc.
