Leader's Traits and Leadership Values
Leadership is the art of influencing other people to move in the right direction. Therefore, leaders should be committed to a vision that will facilitate the change. Leadership values are very crucial assets in every organization. Leaders shape the direction of the organization because they inspire others in the right direction. Leadership traits in an organization determine how the organization will accomplish its mission. Leadership traits of Nelson Bradley influence my life since he had exemplary leadership traits while he served as an army general in the Second World War. As a leader, it is very important to avoid egoism and being focused in our mission. Leadership in a democratic army shows understanding, not weakness; determination; not roughness; kindness, not self-centeredness; pride, not egotism. This will help to promote the ability of the leaders to apply indirect influence in circumstances where clear direction of authority does not exist. Therefore, I will seek to encourage others through timely and focused communication of causes of actions and ideas. I will also be in a position to avoid toxic leadership. This is because I will be able to avoid self-centered attitudes as well as behaviors and motivations that adversely affect the subordinates and motivation of the organization. Toxic traits are destructive to motivations and have poisonous effects to the personal traits of subordinates. Good leadership will ensure that I will be able to develop statement of purpose for the organization. This is because vague goals produce vague outcomes. Further, I will be able to share the vision with my subordinates and let them take ownership of the dream. I will also be in a position to show them how the vision will benefit not only the organization but also their lives.
Leadership has a direct effect on cause relationship in the society, organization and business. Leaders influence culture, values, work motivation and tolerance among subordinates. In addition, leaders shape the strategies of institutions in their effectiveness and execution (Harvey, 2008). Besides, successful leaders influence junior workers around them to ensure that they gain maximum benefits from the resources of the institution. Military requires great leaders just like government or business. Leadership traits in the military are paramount to the profession. This is because they experience increasingly complex challenges and live in uncertain environment. Beside, military needs competent, intelligent, mentally and physically proficient leader (Doty, & Fenlason, 2013). Further, the military operation requires leaders who have a clear understanding of the environment and who can make quick and sound decisions as well as facilitating change. Army leaders must develop a quick adaptability trait because in every operation there are no predetermined solutions to challenges. Therefore, they require leaders who quickly adapt their formations, thinking and employment strategies to each specific problem they face. In this regard, leadership requires an innovative and adaptive mind, a desire to accept cautious risks in unaccustomed and promptly changing circumstances (McLean, 2012). In addition, they should influence their juniors on the capability to influence based on continuous assessment.
General Nelson Omar Bradley
General Nelson Omar Bradley was a U.S. commander in Europe and North Africa during the Second World War. Many emulate his leadership skills because he successfully commanded of all United States ground army in West Germany. He led more than one million men and forty-three army divisions (Harvey, 2008). This was the largest number of American soldiers to be commanded by the U.S. field commander. He also served as Chief of Staff of the United States Army after the Second World War before he became the Chair of the Joint Chief of Staff in the Korean War.
He was the architect of the American victory in Europe against the Germans. He was a mature leader who allowed his subordinates to take glory and credit from his victory (McLean, 2012). He was a creator and an enabler of success. The keys to his success were his ability to avoid egoism, inspire his subordinates and motivate them (Harvey, 2008). His leadership qualities encourage leaders not to do something in order to draw attention from others. Secondly, his leadership qualities indicate that leaders should not allow their ego to get out of control.
However, he was against people who disagree with other obviously. Therefore, he encouraged leaders not to show their disagreements in front of their subordinates (Doty, & Fenlason, 2013). In addition, he also rewarded performers who produced great results in their mission by protecting them when they get into trouble. However, he acted swiftly to non-performers. He was active to the Allied forces success in the war of Normandy (McLean, 2012). He also earned the master of tactician of all forces in the United States.
Leadership Values and Traits that have influenced my life
