There is a vast scope of genres that can be used to communicate. However, that depends on the nature of the audience. The common genres that were used in the assignments include an informal email, formal email, a business letter and presentation.
First, the informal email is very flexible. That implies that it does not have specific format rules. Elements such as the spacing and margins depend on what one identifies as presentable. The second genre was the formal email. It is different from the informal email since it has a strict format. For instance, it incorporates a greetings section, as well as, a closing name. The business letter is the other genre that I used to communicate with English teacher. It has a very strict format. For instance, it incorporates two addresses, one for the sender and the other for the recipient. It is also mandatory that the letter is formatted in a manner that there are a one-inch margin, spaced paragraphs and no indentations. Further, the date is incorporated together with the closing name and signature. Finally, the presentation is slightly flexible. All that one has to emphasize on is the keywords, images and the title of the presentation. Each genre, therefore, has unique traits.
As stipulated earlier, each format suits a particular audience. For instance, in the assignments elements such as gender, education level, language and the interests amongst other factors that influence the choice of the genre.
First, the informal email was used to communicate with an individual named Mahdi. He was a 22 years old male student at Boxe State University majoring in Mechanical Engineering. The recipient hailed from Kuwait within his native language being Arabic. The second message was sent in the form of a formal email. I was communicating with an approximately 23-year-old Student majoring in Electrical Engineering. He too hailed from Kuwait whose native language was Arabic. The Business letter was addressed to the English teacher. Of course, she is female and is roughly 39 to 45 years old. Her native language is English. Finally, the presentation was directed to a sample of three recipients. They include Hamad, a 19-year-old student from Kuwait majoring in Electrical Engineering. The other one was Hang, a 19 years old Vietnamese and Alenezi, a 19-year-old Engineering student from Kuwait whose native language was Arabic.
In each rhetoric situation, the language traits and tone differed. For instance, in the case of the informal email and presentation, there was minimal use of capitals and lower-case letters. The tone was friendly on both accounts. However, all the genres used long and short communication in the context of communication. The also used numerous punctuation marks of different kinds except the presentation. Regarding the choice of words, the informal email used shortened words. Alternatively, the formal email focused on using a formal language because it was a formal document and its purpose was formal. In the context of communicating with the teacher, academic works were used in the business letter. However, a friendly approach was used in making the presentation.
The fact that the presentation and the informal genres did not require a lot of formalities, the tone too was friendly. However, the business letter and formal email both required a serious tone. It was even more serious in the case of the business letter.
In the case of the informal email, the language was friendly. For instance, the message in the does not seem constrained or face restrictions regarding the choice of words. That is why a large part of the message constitutes self-congratulatory messages that are not allowed in any formal message. The same case applies to the presentation. For instance, there is a statement in the presentation that stipulates, “I always found goodness in reading… it’s more like me.” Such statements influence a friendly mood. However, the business presentation and the formal letter tend to go straight to the point. For instance, in the formal email, all the information is straight to the point. The examples provided are also rational and straightforward. Thus, the intentions of the message and the vocabulary used determine the type of language.
After undertaking this part of the course and the assignments, there are a series of issues that have become clear from rhetoric and rhetorical situation perspective. First, it is indisputable that the purpose of the message and the audience being communicated to determines the tone of the language. Further, it has become clear that it would be inappropriate to use a similar approach to communication or genre in vast rhetoric situations. What is not yet clear is whether the audience is the central determinant of the type of genre one used to communicate, or it is should be the other way round.
