Why did the Civil Rights Movement not occur earlier in history? If you had been Elizabeth Eckford, how would you have handled what she went through? Why do American history textbooks emphasize Martin Luther King, Jr.’s involvement in and influence on the Civil Rights Movement but merely touch on Malcom X’s impact? What is your reaction learning that the “I Have a Dream” portion of MLK’s speech was improvised? Was the Civil Rights Movement necessary or would equal rights have been achieved eventually without the resulting violence?
