Chicago Style Papers

If you have been given an assignment that needs to be completed using the Chicago referencing style here are a few guidelines that you should follow as you write your paper:

  • Create a one-inch margin all around your paper
  • Select the Times New Romans font and use font size 12
  • Use the left justified text and double space your work
  • Indent paragraph beginnings by half an inch, use block quotes and hanging indents for the bibliography.
  • Place the page number and last name on the top right corner of the paper
  • The title of the paper should be placed at the center and half way of the cover page while your name should be centered directly below the title.
  • Center your teachers name, course title and institution at the bottom of the page. Note that the cover page should not be included in the total page count and neither should it be numbered.

Chicago style page ordering

The first page of a Chicago paper should be the cover or title page. It should then be followed by the body of the paper, then the appendix, the Notes and finally the Bibliography page. While using Chicago style, place the footnotes at the bottom of the page where the reference occurs and the endnotes should be written on a separate page after the paper’s body. The note number should be put at the end of the sentence where the reference occurs after the last punctuation. Each entry of foot note should have single spacing but different entries should be separated using double spacing. In case one single note has multiple sources, separate each citation with a semicolon. It is a mistake to use two note numbers at the end of a sentence.

The Bibliography page should be apart from the body of the paper. The word Bibliography should be centered at the top of the page without being underlined or being put in bold. The first line of the citation should begin at the margin while the subsequent line should be suspended using the hanging indentation. Please note that unless the teacher requires it, the primary and secondary sources should not be separated. View our Chicago samples on our site.

The bibliography elements begin with the name of the author/s. The last name begins followed by a comma and then the first name. The title of the research material follows. The titles of books and journals are italicized while articles, poems and chapter titles are quoted. The publication details follow with the year the book was published appearing after the journal name or the publisher of the source.
